I actually thought I was pretty well educated about pregnancy, but maybe not. Since most of you have been there and done that, I just have a few questions!!

1.) how long does a normal (full-term) pregnancy last? I know "9 months" but that would mean 36 weeks, but most people post about being 41, 42 o3 43 weeks pregnant? I'm just confused! Laughing

2.) what is a mucus plug?

3.) it's normal for a baby to have purple hands and feet when they are born, right? I see a lot of pics like that, and I was just wondering!

4.) what is an epidural, and demerol? I know an epidural is a shot in your lower back, right? What's it do?

---lol, I babysit 3 month old twins, and my sister is expecting. I know a lot about babies, but it seems like I lack the knowledge in the actual "giving birth" area---

thanks, and congratulations to all you new mommys and soon to be mommys!

1) 40 weeks, which is tech. 10 mo. But most months are more then four weeks so it winds up only being aprox. 9 mo.

2) its a glob of mucus that starts forming when you become pregnant. It comes out at the end of your pregnancy with a little bit of bloody show in it. Its supposed to signify that youre going into labour soon but not always. If you loose it and dont go into labour it regenerates itself.

4)not sure

5) they are pain meds administered when the mother birthing is in too much pain to handle

I think gaby covered most of it. Here's a little more to add

4.) what is an epidural, and demerol? I know an epidural is a shot in your lower back, right? What's it do?

Epidural~numbs mother from basically waist down to have baby. Mother often feels some pressure but no pain or basically.....Feeling.

Demerol~shot for pain.

And:

this means, if you are pregnant for 40 weeks, you are not pregnant for 10 months. You see 40 weeks is 40*7 days. I could do the math for you, but i'll let you open that pathetic little calculator on windows and do it. If you divide this number ( ha, bet you thought i'd just tell you later) by the real rough number of days in a month, 30, you'll get 9.3! That's right, a smidge over 9 months! No where near to 10, unless, maybe you live in tennessee, in which case there are 10 * pi days in a month.
But wait, this gets better. Where the hell did 40 weeks come from? Well, this is actually the number of weeks from the lmp ( last montly paycheck) and the expected due date. Well, between lmp and conception is normally 2 weeks, because that's when the beer money is still available. This means that they've added 2 weeks to the pregnancy, before you've even conceived!
Hell, if you're going to do that, then all women are pregnant for 6 months out of the year because they're pregnant for two weeks each month, and just don't get lucky enough to conceive.
So, now we're down to 38 weeks. 38 weeks * 7 days a week is 266 days. Divide that by our favorite 30 days in a month and you get 8.87 months. Less than 9 months!
