Umbilical Cord Posted: 08-15-04 14:33pm
Danica is 12 days old and her umbilical
cord hasnt fallen off yet... Its bleeding
a lil (not too much but still I dont like
it bleeding lol!) I cant use rubbing
alochol pads on it cuz I know it'll sting
her and she'll scream. Does this mean its
getting ready to fall off? Is it
irritated? I heard it should fall off
between 7-10 days... So is it normal shes
12 days and its still here??

U are supposed to use rubbing alcohol to
keep it dry so that it does fall off. And
it will not hurt her either. I have been
cleaning doms with alcohol. How I do it
is I dip a q-tip in a bottle of alcohol
and clean the area it doesnt bother him
one bit. They say that it takes 2 weeks
to fall off but for others it can take up
to three weeks. I strongly suggest u
start cleaning it with the alcohol and
again it will not hurt her, the hospital
should have told u that as they discharged
u. Dom is now 11 days old and I am
anxiously awaiting for the fall off of his
cord lol I really wanna give him a whole
bath! ~ erica.

The nurses at the hospital told me not to
use rubbing alcohol on her becuz its the
exact same as not doin anything to it.
She toldme only to wash it with a
washcloth when im giving her a spongebath
(i know im sick of doing that oo and cant
wat to use her tub lol!) but I use rubbing
alcohol on occasion but I cant use it
right now becuz its bleeding and its kinda
open so it'l really sting her and hurt
her. Im hoping it'll fall off by
tonight... She's already 12 days old!
Growing so fast but holdin onto her
youth... Lol!

Shauna, thats totally normal. And you are
supposed to use rubbing alcohol because it
dries it out. And it doesnt boither them.
There are no nnerves in the umbilicle
cord. Josh's fell off at 16 days. It was
stuck to the inside of his onesie....Lol.
I undressed him and noticed it was gone
and I started searching for it and I found
it there! Lol. With just a little bit of
blood. Don't worry, it will fall off soon
enough. I know I thought his never would.
Lol.

They always bleed some, and it doesn't
hurt the baby at all, even when it is
bleeding, you need to clean it with
alcohol to dry it up for it to fall off.

Thanx girls! After this post I called my
moms friend ( a nurse that works in
maternity ward here) and she told me that
its probbaly going to fall off within the
next week and that I should definetly not
put rubbing alcohol on it due to the
bleeding. So ill give her a bath tonight
and just wash around it with warm water...
And hopefully tomorrow it'll fall off!
Lol! thanx girls!
