Comparing Seasonale Vs. Ortho Tricyclen Lo Posted: 08-23-04 02:18am
I've been on othro tricyclen lo for a
year, and recently (because of seasonale's
marketing scheme no less) i've become
interested in trying seasonale. A plus
for otclo is that it helps keep my
complexion nice. Does seasonale have this
same benefit? Of course, I suppose there
is a draw to only having periods every
four months, but i'd like to not destroy
my skin in the process. Anybody know the
pros and cons on these two drugs,
especially with regards to
appearance-based side effects (skin,
weight)?
Also, I already have a free trial sample
of seasonale from my doctor. Is there any
harm in trying the sample, then possibly
returning to otclo after that four month
period of time? Is it safe to go back and
forth between medications (not that I plan
to flip-flop, but I am in a decision
making process. . .)?

I would definately try seasonale. No
there is nothing wrong with switching
after trying one. It is true that ortho
tricyclen lo is fda approved for clearing
up skin. Although most other birth
controls do the same, they are just not
fda approved and marketed like ortho is.
Seasonale will probably keep your skin
clear just as ortho did. Again I would
definately try seasonale and see how it
goes. All seasonale basically is, is a
birth control that you take continuously
for four months with no break weeks (ie
bleed weeks). Potentially you could do
this with any type of birth control,
simply take it continuously straight
through for four months with no break
weeks. You don't need to have your period
every month while on birth control seeing
as how you are not ovulating. When you
have your "period", it is simply a bleed
period, you give yourself a break from the
hormones. I know many women for instance
if they know they are going on a
vacation, or simply don't want to have
their period one month for whatever reason
will start their new pack directly after
their last active pill and not take the
sugar (placebo) pills. I am in nursing,
so I am not just some inexperienced person
giving you this information. I am not
telling you to do this with your ortho
tricyclen lo before trying seasonale. Try
seasonale and you may find even more
things you like about it also. If you are
half way through the four months and for
some reason don't like it and want to
switch you can. You would just treat it
as any other birth control and wait a week
prior to starting up ortho again.
Hope this helped. Best of luck!
