Teenage girl with epilepsy?
Posted: 07-21-03 22:20pm

I am 18 years old and 3 years ago I was diagnosed with Epilepsy. I'm trying to deal with it the best that I can but my family members are not helping. They think that I'm not trying to deal with it and not trying to live with it. I can't drive, can't drink like a normal teenager which is much harder then they seem to think. I was also recently raped by my best friend while having a seizure, which is making the epilepsy hundreds of times harder to live with? I say my prayers everynight and take my medicine. I don't what else I can do to make myself happier with this situation. They seem to think I enjoy being depressed about it or something and they're mad at me? Crying
or Very sad

Laughing hi
im so sorry your family dont realise how devasting the diagnosis can be.
I was diagnosed at 13,my mum was fantastic but 1 of my sisters actually violent vommited after seeing me have a fit.The other chooses to ignor it.
my partner deals really well with it,im lucky there.

Perhaps your family are scared too that you will dwell on it too much when what you want to do is deal with it,its like a greiving process in my opinion cos it feels like part of life has been robbed away from you.
As for the rape what can i say,its dreadful, can you get somegood quality counselling,i talked to the epilepsy assoc and they were great.
Good luck

It's very sad that you have not yet learned how to cope with it. I'm 20 years old and have had them for 6 years. I have learned I can have a normal teenage life and have fun with my friends without drinking. Just think you could help them by not letting them drive drunk. I can give you tips on how to cope with it. All you have to do is email me or put me on you yahoo messager.I never had help through mine but I'm going to help you. Laughing

Move Away
Posted: 09-08-03 12:14pm

Sweetheart,

you are not a child anymore. Move. Get out of your city get out of canada if need be. Your environment is enormously stressful. We all know that stress is a siezure trigger. I know it sounds drastic but to stay and "deal with it" is dogma. You have a new condition, you are a new person, new adult, with unique problems." start a new life. I did! It is wonderful. I was diagnosed at eight. I was told never to go swimming, have my children early (if at all) and I would never have a drivers licence. You know what ? I am 27 and I love to swim. Never alone. I have two normal, happy healthy daughters and I have a license. Legally. Remember your doctor doesn't know everything. I just disciplined my self to a strict regime starting at age 14. I went to bed at 9 pm every night to get 8 1/2 hours of sleep. If i'm hungry I eat. Did my grades suffer because I couldn't finish my homework? Yes, of course. But I still graduated with a 3.0 gpa. Your "best friend" was never your best friend. He is slow, pathetice lousy excuse for a human being. Don't be afraid to hate him. Contrary to popular belief, hate is a very useful emotion.
Now comes the harsh part-stop whining to everyone about your epilepsy. Only you can deal with it. Only you can help yourself. You think not being able to drink is hard? Well, I was a bartender for two years. Try to imagine telling the other bartenders you don't drink because you're epileptic. Remember screw 'em if they can't take a joke.

Also, think up "pet names" for your siezures. My husband calls it "dead bugging" siezure is such an ugly word.
Don't forget to move away. You have resouces you don't even know about yet. Good luck.

:d hey hey lauran
i know how u feel i20 and had seizures for 4 yrs now and I also got raped while having a siezure.
It makes u feel unsafe all the time.
It makes the seizures feel worse.
I dunno my parents dont accept my epilepsy either. So I just left home. I went into supported accomadation maybe u should look into this. I get to live on my own and have a caseworker that helps me out when im sick or have had a fit. I dunno.
Hope u get ova it but cuz I know its hard. Seeeya
