Hi all...I am 21 and have been extremely
sluggish and nauseated over the past week
or so. My roommate seems to think I may
be pregnant? Are these symptoms of
pregnancy? I have yet to take a hpt,
only because I don't really want to make
it well known of the possibility.
Should I see a doctor right away? My
current primary doctor is an internal
medicine doc...Should I go see him or find
an obstetrician and make an appointment
with him/her? What can I expect at my
first visit? I really hate doctors, and
especially hate them doing thorough exams.
A step-by-step indepth explanation of
what to expect may ease my worries
somewhat. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks

It really depends, are you late for your
period? If you are then first off, give a
home pregnancy test a try, see what the
result is. If it's positive then go to
the doctor to confirm.
If you're not late, or if your test is
negative then maybe something completely
unrelated to pregnancy is going on...Maybe
you've got a flu or virus, or mono...If
your energy doesn't seem to be coming
back, then again, go see a doctor.

Ok...This is really getting to be hard and
scary for me. I went and bought the
pregnancy test, did that, and there was a
very faint line. I think i'm about two
weeks late, but i'm not exactly sure when
my last menstrual cycle was. I am going
to call my doctor tomorrow, but should I
see him first (the internal medicine doc),
or just go straight to an ob/gyn? Also,
I would love if someone could please tell
me what is going to happen? Can I expect
a complete physical? What would that
include? I've only seen my internal med
doc once, and he took my vital signs and
listened to my heart and lungs...That was
it!!!! Please someone help! I'm so
scared!

You really need to go see your doctor.Your
regular doctor can run a pregnancy test on
you.He/she will probably start with a
urine test and possibly bloodwork if they
feel it is needed. The home kits are quite
accurate and i've always read that any
line means pregnancy.But-to be
certain-you need to see your doc.You
cannot ignore these symptoms forever-if
you are pregnant, you need to decide what
you want to do.If you continue with the
pregnancy, you need to get prenatal care as
soon as posssible. If you choose not to,the
sooner,the better.Please don't stick your
head in the sand on this matter,i know
you're scared, but you need to deal with
the situation asap.If it turns out that
you are not pregnant, get your self on
birth control. You are an adult,it is your
responsibility to keep track of your
menstrual cycle.Mark it on a calander or
in datebook or something so you know when
you are due for your period and when you
last had it.These are questions that your
doctor will ask you at every gyn visit.I
wish you the best.See your doctor and
know for sure.Patty
Well it seems like you are but just check
in with your doctor and like patty said
he/she will have you do a urine test or
blood test.
You are two weeks late so that tells you
as well. You should have been a litttle
more responsible because now you are
scared. Hope all goes well.

Ok, I definitely didn't explain myself
very well when I started with my first
post on here.
I'm not scared because I could be
pregnant...I'm scared because I don't know
what to expect. I got married in may,
and we want kids very much. I am more
scared of the doctor visits. I really
truly hate doctors, and have never really
had a real thorough exam by a doctor.
All i'm asking for is a little help on
what I can expect when I see the doctor
for my first visit, and really each visit
after that. The more specific you can be
the better. I tend to be less stressed
out about things when I know exactly what
is going to happen. Thanks

Ooohhh, thanks for clearing that up!
Your first test can just be with your
regular doc, they'll take blood, for me it
was only 1 tube and that was it. But I
had already been for a preconception
appointment where I had blood taken to
test for rubella immunity and to check
thyroid levels, iron levels, general
health stuff. I think I had blood
pressure checked and a urine test, i'm
prone to bladder infections.
I expect that until you have a positive
blood test your docs probably won't do
anything more extensive. Hope that helps.

Yes,that does make a difference.Like
silverlou said the first visit should be
rather easy. You won't see the doc as often
in the early stages, but as you get further
along, your visits will be more frequent.A
really good book is "what to expect when
you're expecting".I'm not sure of the
author, but it takes you through the
pregnancy step by step.It really has
demystified pregnancy for a lot of
women.Good luck to you and find yourself a
good ob/gyn to help you .Many people are
afraid of the doctor and be upfront on
your first visit and let all the staff
know that you are very anxious. Not just
the pregnancy,but doctors in general.There
are many understanding doctors out
there, but you have to let them know what's
going on in your head!Best to you and I
hope you have the amswers you want!Patty

It will probably depend on the last time
you had a full physical, if it's been more
than a year your doctor may want to do
one. It's going to be very important to
monitor your health while you're pregnant,
to ensure your baby is getting all the
support it needs to grow big and strong!
For your first appointment, when you book
it, let them know that you've had a
positive hpt, you're excited to be
pregnant but terrified of doctors and you
need to know exactly what to expect at
this first visit, have your questions
ready, ask if you'll have to have a full
physical etc. Explain that it's causing
you a lot of stress, not knowing, that
should help.
And then at your first visit, before you
leave, ask the doctor what will happen
next time. Bring a pen and paper, write
it down, so you don't forget.
And have your husband come with you.
...I just read a couple of your posts ago,
if you've never had a full physical, with
the speculum and everything i'm pretty
sure you will be having one soon. I doubt
they will do it at your first booking, but
at that first appointment i'd bet the doc
will want to book you for a full physical.
Ask your doc what to expect, physicals
can proceed differently depending who's
doing them.

First Appointment Posted: 09-04-04 18:06pm
I went to my regular family doctor when I
thought I was pregnant, and all she did
was a urine test to confirm, and of course
blood pressure. I then made an
appointment with my ob/gyn because it was
confirmed by my doctor. The my first ob
appoinment, she did a complete pap smear,
and ordered blood tests. I think that's
what they usually do, but you of course
call first and ask what the appointment
will entail for you.
Good luck,
amy

Thanks for the help guys, although I still
feel pretty scared about this. I guess
i'm just expecting someone to give me a
list answer (first, they do this, then
they do this, etc). I know every visit is
a little different, but i'd rather know
what happened at 20 of your first visits
than just 1 or 2.
Anyone who can share, i'd love it!!!
Btw, still waiting to get in and see my
doc. She's on vacation, and her partner
is absolutely booked.

The book "what to expect when you're
expecting" is very thorough.It follows
your pregnancy week by week and tells you
what to expect on each visit with the doc
and what your body is going through and
give several explanations for tests that
may be done and for symptoms you may
have. You should be able to find it at any
bookstore.Patty

If u think u are pregnant, take an at home
pregnancy test..But don't share with ur
roomies if u dont feel comfortable.
Usually they are correct. If it comes
out either positive or negative still go
to ur ob..Ask for a urine test if u are
worried about needles...Like me :d
haha..It takes about 30 seconds they give
u the results and they take u into a room
and councel u, about ur choices if u have
any questions. It is great. I didn't
even know I was pregnant..Until my
boyfriend's uncoherent grandmother told me
I was..And (they all think since she is
close to dying she knows everything) so I
took the test to try to prove them wrong
and it came out positive!! I went to the
doctors in aug '04 and found out I was 6.1
weeks and already in my second month!! I
was deff. Shocked. Now I am 13 weeks in
my second trimester, and my ob doctors are
the best. Good luck!! And keep us
posted

Alright, so I went and saw my regular doc.
She did a urine test, but said that it
was inconclusive. Does that make sense?
After that, I went home and took a hpt,
and there was a very, very faint line.
I then talked with some friends of mine
who have been pregnant to get the name of
a good ob/gyn in the area. The hard part
now is that I go away to school, but if I
am pregnant will probably be due sometime
next summer, at which time I will be home.
So, i'm not sure whether to see a doc up
here at school, or one back home. Right
now, I have an appointment with an ob/gyn
back home, and when I called to make the
appointment, asked what I could expect at
the first visit. All they told me was to
expect to be with the doctor for a good 45
minutes, and to be at the office for at
least an hour, maybe longer. And that it
was a new patient physical. So now my
question is...What does that mean they are
going to do? I have never been to the
doctor where i've spent more than 20
minutes with the doctor. I'm very
excited now at the fact that I may be a
mom-to-be, but i'm scared out of my mind
on what will happen at that appointment.
Any in-depth answers (or guesses) would be
wonderful. The more idea of the
possibilities of what may happen, the
better.
Thanks

Ok Babydoll I Am Here to Help..lol Posted: 09-29-04 12:04pm
If the test at ur Dr.'s came out
inconclusive..They should have done
another one! But if u took a hpt and u
still saw a faint line...It is most likely
correct! I dont know if thats what u
want or not. Where is the potential
baby's daddy??? Send his ass out and buy
u another hpt to take a couple days after
the first. Thats what I did and my lines
were very bold and purple!! :d I am 15
weeks pregnant and know exacally what u
are going thru!
First things first...No blood is taken!!!
Lol..That should ease ur mind a little
bit. What they do is...Wiegh u...Take ur
blood pressure...Make u pee in a cup and
stick a pregnancy stick in there whip it
out and they give u the results...If it is
negative..They will prolly tell u to get
on some sort of birth control..Or just
plain send u home. If it comes out
positive...They take u to the doctors for
counsiltation...The doctor congrats
u...Then finds out how far along u
are...By ur last period date..And then
asks if u want to keep it..If not what ur
options are...The doctor comforts u..Gives
u some prenatals..And sends u on ur
way...Most of that hour u are waiting to
be seen by a nurse or a doctor...Lol..
:p dont be nervous...And I am in college
too...My doctor said I have to take off
the second semester..Cause I would be
truly uncomfortable in school..And I am
due in march...But please keep us posted
on what happens...If u are or aren't!!

You can expect a pap smear with your first
apt. If you are infact pregnant.
Everything else is just the norm; blood
pressure stats, pee in the cup, weight,
etc. Hope all goes well!

Girl, first you just need to take a home
pregnancy test by now if you are having
those symptoms then it should be able to
show up positive or negetive. I think the
actually reason why you dont want to get
one is not because you want to make the
possibility known (you can go to a store
on the low and no one has to know) the
real reason is you may be hoping you are
and you don't want to take a test and find
it to be negative you want to go on as
long as possible thinking you may be well
the only problem with that is, you either
are or you aren't and you are going to
find out within the next few months anyway
you might as well find out now and if you
are start your prenatal care now, if you
not then you don't have to worry about
doctors. Also you can just go to your
doctors and he will you a pregnancy test
in the office which will not include any
kind of pelvic exam or anyother internal
exam immediatly, or planned parenthood
which the same thing goes for them. But
don't avoid this its not something to be
putting off having a child is serious and
knowing as soon as possible is too!
