I have had spleen problems now for about 7
weeks or so. It was my very first symptom
of mono, then about 2-3 weeks later came
along the sore throat, mild fever, fatigue
etc. I feel this pressure just on my left
side of my stomach. My doctor said my
spleen or liver isn't enlarged but my
spleen reacted to the virus and causing
this pressure, it's really annoying. My
blood test showed my liver is good. How
long could this pressure last? And also I
have had mild diarrhea several times
during these weeks, are those associated
with mono?

Son Has Mono Too Posted: 10-07-04 22:42pm
Hi, how are you doing now? Are your
symptoms subsiding or gone? I would like
to hear about your mono since I know
nothing about it and my son now has it.
He was just diagnosed today, but has been
very sick for 3 days. I have been reading
up on mono and see that an enlarged spleen
can be a main symptom of it. What I am
wondering is, how long were you sick and
what all were your symptoms. My son has
had a severely sore throat for 4 days,
very swollen glands, and can't eat much
because of his horribly swollen tonsils,
but apparently was just getting it weeks
ago when he was ill then too with a low
grade fever, a cough etc., which went
away, then this came on full force.. I am
a bit worried because he has never been so
sick in his life and he looks very sick
now. I take him back to the doctor on
monday. I hope you are better. Please
respond if you have any information for
me. Thankyou

Mono Posted: 10-07-04 22:52pm
Hello. My 16 year old contracted mono
about 4 weeks ago...She first had a staph
infection and then toxic shock syndrom and
she was hospitalized for about 4
days..Then while recovering from that she
contracted mono. (she ended up in the
hospital again) she is still very, very
ill. She has had so many tests done on
her. We have been told that we should
watch for spleen problems. She is still
very tired, headache, and severe abdomonal
pain. She has blood in her stool/urine
daily and the doctors are baffled as to
why...She is having a colonoscopy on
monday. She has had 2 ct scans and blood
tests for everything...Any ideas??

Feeling a Lot Better :) Posted: 10-08-04 12:48pm
It all started somewhere in the 3-4th week
of july. I started having annoying
pressure on my spleen, about 3 weeks
later, I developed a sore throat, chills,
fever rise only when I had those chills,
very very little muscle aches, abdominal
pain & mild diarrhea and fatigue.
Everything is gone now and my spleen is
good now too but it was never
enlarged just reacted to the virus. In
the past 4-5 weeks or so I developed
abdominal probs and my spleen got even
worse, the doc said it looks like it's at
the urge of going away well he was right,
spleen is almost completely good and I
still have minor abdominal probs and
that's all. Hope your kids will get
better. Some get it bad, while others
don't get it too bad like me while others
don't feel anything. Everyone is
different, but you should know that your
kids will feel better soon and this may
take months! But may take like a 1/2
year for them to be completely normal, and
let them rest since relapses may occur
even though they are uncommon. But I
never rested and that's my prob I think.
But hey, I survived. But again, good
luck to your kids. As for the parent with
the 16 year old....What you describe....It
sounds that she is having other probs!
Caz not even in the severe cases of mono I
highly doubt there is blood in the urine
and stool!

How Do You Know When Your Child Should Be Hospitalized? Posted: 10-08-04 14:21pm
Hi again, how do you know when your child
should be hospitalized? I have faith in
the doctors only sometimes. I was not
told what to watch for. Last night, my
son suddenly had stomach pain, then it
went away. I don't know of anything to
keep an eye out for except severe pain
upper left abdomen because of the spleen,
and this I read on the internet. I am so
worried about him. He was just at the
doctors yesterday, his white count or
whatever it is that is the mono was about
72, and I was told normal was about 40?
Does anybody here know what I can watch
for and when to be even more concerned
than I am now? I take him back to the
doctor on monday. Thankyou

If it's just mono, don't worry and
hospitalizations for mono are very rare
unless the spleen ruptures which is like a
1:1000 thing, it's really rare. There's
nothing you can do except rest and it will
go away on its own. But I think it's bull
that it's said all symptoms except fatigue
resolve in about 4-6 weeks! For me the
fatigue resolved in about 4 weeks or so
but my spleen just recovered maybe like a
week ago after about 2 1/2 months! It may
take months to be completely good. So
relax and everything will be fine. Btw,
when your son had stomach pain, was it on
the upper or lower region and did he
happen to have diarrhea too?
