Vasectomy
Posted: 09-14-04 21:28pm

Hi. My husband and I are considering having him undergo a vasectomy. I have lupus (sle with nephritis) and children are out of the question, but I can still get pregnant (not what we want).

Has anybody had a vasectomy, what should he expect, and where can I get more info on it?

Thanks.

Your doctor or planned parenthood will be able to help. I understand it is a very quick and simple operation, and does not require a hospital overnight or anything. My partner had it done before I met him -- and I can confirm that there does not seem to be any negative impact on sexual function at all!!! :d . It is wonderful not having to worry about getting pregnant at all, not having to use bc is great. But I think you do need to use other protection for a few months after the operation, and then they test the semen to make sure it is clear and has worked properly.

Good luck.

Thanks for the information. I'll check into it.

Did your partner experience any discomfort at all?

Just make sure that you are still careful after he gets the procedure done. Even if his sperm is tested after the operation and comes out clear, doesn't mean it will stay that way. One of my sister's friends got pregnant while on birth control and her man had a vysectomy. These things can happen!

I've asked my partner about it, and he says it was a bit uncomfortable for a few days, not really painful just a bit tender, but it was worth it! He knew he never wanted kids and it's been great for us.

I have heard that it can undo itself, but this is really rare. If you think you need to use other birth control as well, there is really no point in getting it done, is there? I think it is probably one of the most effective, safest and has least side effects of just about any other method. If couples really don't want children, there is absolutely nothing to compare with this little operation!

By the way, if your husband is at all reluctant about having it done, because maybe they will find a cure for you and you will want children, or whatever, suggest that he has some sperm frozen.
