Weird Symptoms While On Birth Control Posted: 09-17-04 15:21pm
I've been on birth control for almost 3
weeks, and for the past week i've been
experiencing some weird things with my
body. All but one of these symptoms has
lasted about a day:
- intense stomach pain (only one day)
- excess gas (2 days)
- random twinges of back pain, usually on
the left or right sides
- blood and clear mucous in tiny bit of
stool (happened only once)
- loss of appetite (last night only, so
far)
..............
Other symptoms that have not gone away are
these:
- feeling of fullness, only when I wake up
in the morning (lasts about an hour, but
prevents me from eating)
- weight gain (6 pounds in 3 weeks)
..........
I asked a nurse at family planning and she
said that these signs aren't related to
birth control or pregnancy (definitely
made sure to ask about such a
possibility). She said I may have a
stomach bug, but I don't really know.
A week ago, I had a very bad pain in my
left side, just above my pubic area, which
I assumed was a hernia, but was a pulled
muscle. It just started to hurt one day.
I felt a lump protruding from the same
spot, and it felt like a ball rolling
around under my skin and was about the
size of a quarter. There's one on the
other side in about the same place, but I
can't feel it as much and it doesn't
hurt.
.........
Something tells me my weight gain is from
my birth control (i was told it can do
that), but I have no idea what could
account for the rest of my symptoms. They
just appeared.
I'm not one who likes to run to my mom for
every little ache and pain that I get, but
does anyone think I should be overly
concerned about this? Or should I wait
and see if it goes away?
Does anyone know what this might be?

I've had stomach pain and gas, but I dont
think it's related to birth control. As
for your other symptoms, id suggest going
to a doctor asap. The twinges of back
pain, blood in stool, and the
hernia/muscle/lump, arent good I wouldnt
think.

I know when I went on the patch I gained
about 5 pounds. I was on the patch for
6 months. I recently changed to
seasonale (4 periods a year pill) and I
lost the weight and love the pill.
I know the pill gives me alot of side
affects no matter what kind I take. So
unless it bothers you I wouldn't worry to
much since you already spoke to a nurse.
I also have the stomach pain and gas so
maybe it is the pill and it seems since I
got on the pill 8 years ago I have had
this problem.
If these problems continue I would go to
another doctor so they can do some
tests.

I forgot one final symptom: I get a
feeling of having a full stomach after
taking only a few bites of food. Tonight
I had about 5 bites of a sub sandwich and
I felt full, but I ate the rest of it
involuntarily and i've been feeling
full/sick for about 3 hours. Perhaps the
sub just didn't agree with me, but I took
some antacids anyway.
............
Also, I took my problem to another health
forum and someone suggested I may have
something called gastritis, which is a
swelling of the stomach of some sort, and
it causes most if not all of my symptoms
(unsure about the weight gain, but then
again...Birth control).
This condition isn't fatal or
life-threatening, so I won't worry about
it right now. I'm going to wait and see
if it subsides. If not then i'll either
tell my mom to make me an appointment or
i'll speak to a medical professional
myself.
But I just don't want my mom spending
money on me if all they're going to tell
me is that I have a little stomach bug
that will go away with some pepto-bismal
or something - we aren't exactly rolling
in the cash and my mom has tons of loans
and a credit card to pay off. She needs
all of her money, and I have no job (and
also no way to get to one anyway), so I
couldn't pay for it. I'm just stuck I
suppose.

i've only experienced two fits of back
pain, one where I woke up and the entire
left side of my back as well as my hip
ached for about half an hour (when the
mystery lump was still hurting me), and
once this morning, and it was on the right
side and just came and went in an instant
- I don't have constant/chronic back pain.
Sorry if I made it sound like that o.O
as for the blood...Well...I don't know if
it was actually blood. This may sound
disgusting so bear with me, but I had
eaten something with red sauce earlier
that day and I believe that's what I was
seeing. And I don't know if this is
anything threatening but when I used the
bathroom a couple of days ago I noticed a
white piece of something in my stool that
looked like the top of a corn kernel. The
only thing is that I haven't eaten corn in
over 3 years. So I have no clue what it
was.
Finally, my mom called a nurse
practitioner about the painful lump and
she said it was probably a pulled muscle
and told me to take some ibuprofen motrin,
and before I knew it the pain was gone. I
can still feel the lump very easily, but
there's no pain, even when I push down on
it.
.................
I did some research (as I said) on this
gastritis, and I looked for known
causes...Only one really jumped out at me:
yeast infection.
I've had my yeast infection since
february, and about the time my symptoms
began I was not itching or feeling the
need to itch as much. Also, my trademark
yeast "odor" seems to have diminished to a
less potent, entirely different scent.
Maybe because i'we been washing more
thoroughly, but could my infection have
evolved into a stomach condition?? And if
so, why after so long? Why didn't it
happen early during my yeast infection, if
that is indeed the culprit?
.............
Well, it'll be pepto-bismal and tums for
me until this clears up. But if I notice
blood in my stool again i'll probably have
to inform my mom. Even if she doesn't
make an appointment, she can always ask
about my condition first.
.........
Thanks you guys for your help. I'll keep
you updated if there's anything to update
........

I posted about this earlier, but yes...I'm
on the pill, and i've experienced morning
sickness-like symptoms. I just started
my 3rd pack of pills, and the last 2
mornings, I felt queasy in the morning,
and I retched in the toilet and (sort of)
threw up (by sort of, I mean there really
wasn't anything in my stomach to vomit,
because I had just awoken from sleeping).
The rest of the day (both today and
yesterday) I am and was completely fine,
had no more nausea, and a full appetite.
I am certain that i'm not pregnant (having
just finished my period up only days ago,
and all). It seems that my nausea starts
up every time I go back onto my active
pills, and goes away after a few days.
Should I be concerned about this? I
mean, it's not really affected me much at
all, but again, I have been on the pill
for over 2 months already, and am entering
my 3rd pack. So should I consult my
doctor or stick it out for another month
and see what happens?
