My Labor Story Posted: 09-17-04 17:25pm
Ok, on monday night at about 11:30 I
started having contractions that were
ranging between 3-5 minutes apart. I
timed them for an hour, woke up kevin,
called the labor hotline, and then went to
the hospital. It really sucked because
they wanted to see what my contractions
were doing and they hooked me up to this
monitor (that toco thing)... But they
were having problems tracing her heartbeat
and they wanted to get a couple good
excels in her heartbeat... Well anyways,
I ended up on that until 4 am until they
finally called the doctor to see if they
should admit me... By 4:15 they had me in
my room and hooked back up to the
monitors. They kept checking me but I had
only dialated to 2 cm, but they said that
her head was really low, and usually they
dont get that low until 7 cm. The nurse
told me that the doctor would probably
break my water to induce labor but wasnt
sure what the plan was yet. Well he came
in at 8:45 and decided to break my water
(lol he said he was suprised that the baby
didnt just fall out of me she was so low).
After that, the contractions started
getting really painful, but they said that
they wanted to see how much I would
dialate and if it still didnt do anything
then they were gonna start me on some
pitocin. Well I walked around for an hour
like they told me to, they came back in,
and checked me... Almost 3 cm..... So
the nurse told me I should try to take a
shower to help me relax... Well that just
made everything even worse! When I got
out of the shower it was soooo bad I just
layed back in bed and told me mom to get
the nurse to check me to see if I could
get the epidural yet... Well I was 3 cm.
I told her I wanted some kind of pain
relief so she called the doc to see if it
was ok to start the pitocin. She came
back, gave me an iv, and the guy came to
give me my epidural, and then they started
the pitocin. I loved the epidural! It
was awesome! It took the pain away like
instantly and I didnt even know I was
having any contractions. After this I
lost track of time. All I know is it was
some time around 11:30-12:00. Then I
remember being 5 cm, probably around 12:30
and then at around 1:00, I was 9 cm..
Kevin called his parents and told them to
hurry up and get there cuz it was almost
time to start pushing... I started
pushing soon after that, and then at 1:26
brooklyn was born. They had to cut me cuz
her heartrate started to drop. I have no
idea how many stitches I have, but kevin
he couldnt watch, but he knew they cut me
really far. It was really easy pushing,
except for when I almost passed out a
couple times.
Brooklyn had an apgar score of 8, and then
9. She has dark brown hair... And lots
of it! I was born with alot of dark hair
too, but then it turned blonde. Shes got
some blonde highlights in her hair so I
think she may turn blonde too.

I'm glad it was fairly easy! The more
stories I hear, the more I think i'm gonna
do the epidural too!

Of all the things I really don't think I
can face an epidural.
I think you are so brave for having one.
I'm glad it went (mostly) well for you.
I faancy the idea of a water birth, but
can't get my head round the epidural, it
just totally freaks me out.
Congrats huni! Sounds like a pretty easy
dilvery for the most part. Congrats on
your lil girl!

I got a spinal block and I didnt even feel
it! They give u a local shot to numb the
area, just a pinch and then they bring out
the "big guns", I culd feel it going in my
spine, but no pain :d

I definetly recomend the epidural. I have
a huge, I mean *huge* fear of needles.
Once you feel how bad labor gets(i dont
even want to imagine what it feels like
when you are like dialting to 7... I only
went to 3 w/o the epidural!), ecspecialy
with back labor, you will want the
epidural. You dont even feel it when they
stick it in... At least I didnt, the
contractions hurt way to bad for me to
even realize they epidural had already
been done. But it will make labor sooo
much easier. It was a piece of cake after
I got it. And its kinda funny being all
numb and not being able to move the
greatest. And they say that its harder to
push when you are all numb and drugged up,
but I didnt have a single problem. It
just feels like you gotta take a huge crap
when its time to push. I didnt even take
lamaze or anything and everybody was in
wow with how good I was doing. Lol the
doctor said I should be teaching classes
on pushing. Lol I just cant stop talking.
I was fearing labor sooo much, and im
sooo happy that it wasnt at all like how I
expected(after the epidural of course).
you ladies are lucky! I couldn't even get
an epidural. About 2 years prior to
giving birth, I had spine surgery and they
told me that I could not get an epidural
when I had kids because I have metal rods
in my back.
So there I was 14 years old, pregnant, and
giving birth. I was in pain!
what exactally is an
epidural? Is it just a shot that goes in
your lower back, or is it a
catheder?
i can't put it into my own words since, I
haven't gone through labor yet; but here
is a medical definition.
Epidural anesthesia.
A needle is placed between the vertebrae
into a space called an epidural space.
Medication is then placed into this space.
A small catheter is then threaded
through the needle into the space and the
needle withdrawn. The catheter is left
in placed and taped so that it does not
move. You can then be given a continuous
small amount of medication or be given a
bolus dose when you begin to have pain.
An epidural relaxes the pelvic muscles and
the nerves are bathed in the local
anesthetic medication which causes an
insensitivity to pain. You will still
feel the pressure of the contractions and
the urge to push. After the baby is
born, the catheter is removed.
