I am thinking about it, I am trying to look into the costs and stuff, cuz you have to pay to basically store the cord blood at the bank and a couple of other fees, I meant to ask my doc about that last time... Dang... I guess I will ask him next appt

I am thinking about it too. I am just afriad that I may get it banked somewhere and the place may up and close down or my baby's cord blood will get switched. And there are places that say they have been in business for like 15 years. But that is kind of odd b/c cord blood banking hasn't been availbe to the public for that long to my knowledge. How about you erin?

Well I have no _idea_ how much it costs, so I haven't thought too seriously about it. Destiny, the places who have been in business longer may also do other stuff like blood and sperm banking. Jat. I dunno. The chances of anyone contracting or developing something where the stem cells would be necessary for survival are slim.

Any body know about the prices?

I was thinking about it, I got all the info on a few places... Theres a up front fee of around $2000 then you have to pay around $120 a month to have it stored. I think I may at least donate the cord blood tho, since the banking just isn't in our budget no matter what we do. At least if we donate it, owen's cord blood will save lives and not go to waste.

If it's not in your budget to bank it, look into at least donating it, it's free!

This may sound really bad and i'm sorry if it offends anyone, but honestly I think cord blood banking is just a way for those companies to take advantage of and make money off of a concerned mother. Think about it, if they were really concerned with using it to save lives...They wouldn't charge you anything for it. That's stupid in the first place, your body produced that blood, why are they gonna charge you for your own blood?

the blood from your umbilical cord has stem cells in it that can be used in genetic therapy if you develop some types of diseases. Stem cells are cells that don't have a type yet (like they aren't bone cells or nerve cells or red blood cells or any of the types we normally know about) so you can make them become whatever type you want.
