People are insecure about it. Its not always easying getting a test if you're nervous or scared. My advice would be if you notice some symptoms, don't have oral or any intercourse without a condom. Get tested aswell. The truth might be shocking, but it could save millions of other lives.

Window Period
Posted: 12-30-04 02:44am

Yo listen man, there is a 3 to 6 month window period in which seroconversion takes place. During this time u test negative! But still have the virus? People have guilt about sexual encounters and have extreme anxiety about contracting the disease. Perhaps becomming borderline hypochondriacs. I myself am one and the symptoms are all too real, but listen man, im waiting till the 45th day (that's the average time) it takes to show positive, then im getting tested 3month mark, and 6 month mark, but for u to call me and everyone else that worries about this ignorant/stupid, makes me wonder how much you really know and understand about this subject. Go to another forum, try ignorant morons.

You don't have to swap cum to get hiv. And sex isn't the only way to contract the virus, so just because this guy was a virgin doesn't mean he wasn't infected.

If you wait to test and don't have intercourse while you are waiting for your results then you are not stupid or ignorant. And are not the people who have unprotected sex (both parties infected or not) stupid? I mean, if you willingly have unprotected sex you are just asking to be infected with all kinds of things including hiv. So, you can't just start blaming infected people for spreading it or calling them stupid. Grow up.

Big man, I am sorry I wasn't telling you to grow up! I was telling the original poster who was saying that people are stupid, not you! I am so sorry you thought that!

He could have gotten infected through a blood transfusion, needles, etc. But, if he hasn't had a transfusion, doesn't use drugs that require the use of needles (and share the needle) or hasn't had sex, then no he wouldn't be infected. I didn't mean to worry you! I was only trying to state that hiv is not only contracted through sex.
If it will make you feel better, since you said you are a hypocondriac then I would take the test. I mean, it is free for you and what would it hurt? But, don't stress yourself out so much about this. If he hasn't done any of the above mentioned things then he wouldn't be infected and therefore you wouldn't be either( from him.)
and again, I am sorry that you thought I was telling you to grow up!

Testing And Symptoms
Posted: 04-09-05 07:09am

Please remember that an hiv test within the window period of three months will not produce a definitive result. Three months after the episode is when testing is conclusive.

Also remember that symptoms are not reliable to diagnose hiv! You can have lots of odd symptoms and be hiv negative, and indeed, you can have none at all and be hiv positive. Just test. At three months

Bigman16,

ummm...Dude...Get a test and stop stressing.

You don't need this kind of stress in an already stressfull existence.

You also might want to get some counceling on the subject of what your friend did to begin with, this is likly part of your delema.

Just some thoughts...You deserve to be ok with yourself, and not live on this edge.

Peace

Chances Are Low
Posted: 05-22-05 10:33am

It is extremely unlikely that you could be infected with hiv from recieving oral sex. Giving oral sex is more risky. The reason why it is low is because saliva does not contain sufficient quantities of the virus for infection to take place. If there was any fresh blood in the mouth, this increases the risk, but it's not likely that there was. How often do you have blood in your mouth?

I shouldn't worry, but get tested for your own peace of mind. And btw, in this modern day, a three month elisa test is perfectly reliable in cases such as this.

Risk low or not, it is still possible and that is all that matters.
You can go ahead and get one of the early tests, but they often produce false positives, and that is added stress that no one needs.

Perspective
Posted: 05-23-05 05:56am

What i'm trying to do, hotasfrick, is give a sense of perspective to the situation, since it seems to be clouded somewhat by unstable rhetoric. If I read a post which describes a high risk episode, I will say so and reccomend at least one test. Likewise, if it is low, as in this case, I will say so. I am sure that the person will get tested, and so the situation will be resolved - but my aim is to bring some reassurance to the person in a difficult time of worry by presenting to him the facts o his particular situation. Scientifically speaking, his risk was very low and there is no harm in him knowing this, so that the testing process is easier for him. Don't get me wrong, i'm all for testing, it is vital so that hiv rates can be lowered.

Blood Transfusion
Posted: 05-30-05 05:25am

What is your point karen? It's been stated that blood transfusions can infect a person with hiv.

However, in this day and age, such an occurence is very rare in western countries because of vigorous testing. When donated blood is tested, it is given a series of tests - not just the regular test which detects hiv at the 3-6 month test, but also ones which can detect very early hiv. I believe that the chances of becoming infected with hiv from a blood transfusion is around 1 in 500,000.

Because of this, it is very unlikely that someone will have been infected with hiv by a blood transfusion, unless they had the transfusion before 1985 when blood screening was established. Poor old denholm elliot.

Another reason that some poeple wait so long to get tested is because some doctors have not yet acepted the fact that it can be spread among heterosexuals. I was dating an avid drug user about 5 years ago and when I went for my 6 month check-up I asked for an hiv test, because me and him had just broken up and I thought I better make sure that I was clean. Well, my doctor put up a big fight about it...Saying that they are expensive test and that I had a very slim chance of having it since I and my ex were straight...Her never even took into account that he used drugs intravenously. After I tested positive for chlamydia, he finally tested me for hiv and it was negative, but I have heard of many other people having this same experience.
