Single Parent of 2/hysterectomy Next Week Posted: 10-06-03 16:37pm
I am having a vaginal hysterectomy next
week, on thursday. Am I being overly
optimistic to assume I will be able to
drive my kids to school monday? My ex
(who isn't all that helpful) has agreed to
take the kids for the weekend. I have
arranged to be off work at least two
weeks, but what about the day to day
stuff...Cooking, cleaning, carpooling to
soccer, school etc. I am 44 years old and
in pretty good shape, will this make a
difference? Thanks

Hi sunflower,
I am 32 and had a vaginal hysterectomy
the 26th of september. I am doing great
now. I have 4 children and when I came
home form the hospital 2 days later, I
could not handle being around my kids,
they are busy. I stayed at my moms for a
couple days and when I returned home was
able to stay home. I did not find the
pain bad at all, I took ibupropen and
tylenol only for the first week. I also
developed a kidney infection so that
created unneeded pain. I am off work for
at least six weeks, and am not allowed to
carry a laundry basket for the first
month. The stitching the surgeon uses
can easily tear with pressure. I know it
is hard to adhere to the advice given
reguarding recovery but if you dont you
greatly increase the risk of further
problems and prolonged recovery. This
must worry you, being a single mom. You
will need to reach out to friends and
family for support for the first couple of
weeks it isn't easy. I was able to go to
the grocery store for a few minute visit 9
days after my surgery, but I still get
tired really easy, and notice my energy
level has drastically decreased. Talk to
your ex, let him know that this isnt a
small ordeal, this is considered a major
surgery and requires lots of rest and
support to recovery healthily. I hope
this doesn't sound horrifying, I just read
your post and worry that you are not going
to give yourself time to heal and that is
so important. Take care and good luck!

Ask For Help Posted: 10-13-03 21:37pm
I hope your x will understand and help you
out. If not talk to the school maybe a
teacher or another parent will at least
pick up and drop off for a while. You
need to rest, or you will be down for
longer and what will you do with your kids
then.If you go to church ask around at
church or ask your pastor I am sure
someone could help. My surgery is set for
nov. 5 and my friend is flying in from
dallas to stay with me, and I have 4 dogs,
my mother is going to take a couple and my
son the others. Its gonna drive me crazy
being at home because run my store, and I
love my work but I know my butts gonna be
on the couch because I know if I dont I
will be down longer or really do other
damage. So ask for a little help there
are people out there that will care. Good
luck. Toria

My surgery is this thursday. How exactly
will I make it worse by driving the kids
to school etc. I mean, I always thought
that if you get up and move, you heal
quicker. I do have backup, friends,
church etc, but just assumed I could take
the weekend and then resume some light
activity. Is it really necessary to lie
low for several weeks? Thanks, lucy
