Can I Give My Kidney to My Wife? Posted: 10-06-04 23:10pm
My wife recently had a liver transplant
and she is doing great, but with pbc
(primary biliary chirisos) it also damaged
her kidney which by the way she only has
1. She is currently on the kidney
transplant list, but my question is can I
(her husband) give her one of my kidneys
even though I am a diabetic? I take 2
pills (1) actos and (1) amaryl plus I use
insulin (lantus). Will I still be able to
give my kidney to her? She is in chronic
kidney failure and I need to know if I can
help my wife or not.

I think you posted this in the wrong
forum, but only a doctor can answer your
question, they have to run tests on both
of you to see if your organs are
compatible with hers.
Good luck

Donating Kidney to Wife Posted: 10-12-04 23:59pm
Hi, sorry about the unfortunate situation.
Sounds familiar though. I recently had
a kidney/pancreas transplant...Sept 2003,
while waiting on the list the same idea
came to my husband, who was diagnosed with
type 2 diabetes at about the same time.
The answer that we recieved from all
doctors was that he would not be a good
donor, for two possibilities...One being
that he may also develop kidney problems,
since it is so common in diabetics, and
two, the transplant surgeons want the most
perfect/healthy organ they can possibly
get. It comes down to money, they don't
want to put a questionable organ in. I
waited two years for my transplant, and
was doing dialysis the whole time. I had
three calls to go to the hospital before
it actually went through on the fourth
time. I would still check with the
transplant docs, they may agree to test to
check your compatibility, but in the
meantime, just continue to be
supportive...Sounds like you have gone
through this before. Daphne
