Grand Mal Seizures
Posted: 07-23-03 16:31pm

My son had his first seizure when he was 19, I thought he was dying. Crying
or Very sad He's 20 now and has a severe seizure every month or so. He's too old to be insured so we can't afford a doctors help. He was diagnosed with "Right Temporal Interictal Epileptogenic". He feels his life is over. With every seizure he looses more of his memory and he can't keep a job. I'm so scared for him. Wish there was help or something I could do. He takes Dilantin, but he's had 2 seizures on the medication. I feel very helpless when tells me he has severe headaches for 3 days after having a seizure. What can a Mother do?

Okay I'm sorry I'm lost I was trying to reply and quoted instead.

I would suggest since he is over 18 that you checkinto SSI, since
he can't hold a job. I would also call Vocational REhabilation and
see how to go about getting help with them.

I would also request the doctor help, get the meds. There are programs
for this part.

Hi I have had epilepsy since I was 14 years of age. The doctor said it was due to a head injury.I really never have had anybody to chat with about it. I never know what people are going to think of me if I tell them I have seizures. It will be very nice to chat with someone who understands. Thank You

Hey Catwoman, Totally understand, my son has them, have known several people who have them too. It's pretty common now days. My son never had a head injury, doctors don't have a clue why he suddenly started having them. How often do you have seizures? Do you drive? My son refuses to stop driving, it scares me to death. Don't feel alone, lots of people understand and know how to deal with them. I'm surprized by the amount of people that live with it. Stay strong, maybe it will pass.

I am 18 years of age and I was dignosed with epilepsy when I was 15 years old. My first seizure was at school in the classroom I had no clue what was going on. To this day I take medication for it but I have been looking epilepsy up on the internet and it was telling me I was suppose to be put into a class where I would be able to understand stuff my brain doesnt work as fast as everyone elses and yes it is true that we can lose memory and our head hurts like no other after were done with the seizures. We dont know what less to do we cant drive we cant work we basiclly cant do anything.

Was your epilepsy caused from a head injury? Or did they just start happening? My son is in total denial, it worries me. He thinks there just going to go away some day. How often do you have sz's? Are they grand mal? It kinda sounds like you go through what my son goes through. I understand that if a person goes 2 years without one they may not have any more, have you heard that?

Wish you the best!!! Laughing

Grand Mal And Depakoate
Posted: 08-24-03 23:19pm

:p I have had grand mals since I was 11 and I will be 36 in december.
I live a normal life, I haven't had a seizure in about 4 years. I own my own business, and I live alone, I drive and I tried all the medicens but depakoate worked for me. I take it every day and I do not worry.
I get my medicen and bloodwork free, your local health clinic has a program called the patient assist program, your family doctor can refer you and the doctor will only charge you or your son $10.00 for a medical visit and the medicen is free and so is bloodwork. I go every three months to pick up my medicen.

Good luck

Right Medication
Posted: 08-25-03 11:31am

Get on the right medication and you will be able to put the problem behind you. You may have to try every different medication and it may take two
or three years of trial and error but you will find it and the longer you can go without having a seizure the less likely you are to have them all together. Try to eat right, get plenty of sleep, take your medication every single time you are supposed to, just get in the habbit and it won't seem like such a chore. Good luck and I will pray for you.

Smile my name is sharon . I also have s'z. It runs in my family, on my fathers side. My sz' was discovered when I became pregnant with my first child. I know now I had them since birth. My mother told me I would sz when I was a baby, no one said it was epilepsy. I remember tuning out a lot. I would loose time. I think my grandmother figured it out but couldn't get my dad to do anything. I had a lot of trouble in school. I felt lonely because I would loose time and people thought I wasn't paying attention. I had a neighbor in calf. Take me to the doctor because she found me one day starring at the t.V. But couldn't get me to respond. She has ep. So she reconized what was happening to me.I lost half a day. They put me on meds for three years. When I had my second child they told me I wouldn't need my meds any more. I was find for twenty years- then boom! Their back. I was under a lot of stress due to an illness of my husbands. I had two major sz's two months a part. Plus I was diagnosed with lupus and now I will be on meds for the rest of my life. They tested me to see if my sz's was brought on by my lupus or if I had epilepsy from birth. It was from birth. I don't believe that if you don't have a sz for two years tht you won't have any more. God bless you! Smile

Hi, please don't give up! There are a lot of people out there who understand what you are going through. Whenever you are down just take it out on those keys and let it all out! Thats what this is for. We all have our bad days and we all have our bad!!!!! Days. I'm not telling you that its not rough because it is! Sometimes hearing about other peoples problems help us to deal with ours. I know it sure helps me.
I have epilepey-lupus-ashma-carpul tunnel- hernia -collitis- aback-knee problems- hip-going out-eyes are always cloudy, need surgery- fibormyalgia- and my feet need surgery- and i'm depressed! Oh yes I have high blood pressure to boot!
My husband needs a heart and both lungs replaced. He was on a transplant list for years, until we found out he would probably die on the table. They only wanted to use him for study because what he has is so rare . No one has lived as long as he has with this problem. We found out about his in "89. My problems escalated in "97 I had to have emergency surgery in jan.'98. They found cancer. All the test showed that my abdomem and colon area was covered. They called in a cancer doctor to do the surgery, and guess what? They found no cancer in me at all! That's what the power of prayer can do! My husband has good days and bad days . But he is alive and stable. I also have my good and bad days, but we have each other and live one day at a time. I'm only telling you all this to make you see that take what life dishes out and turn it into something positive! Your children need you in their lives! Don't take that away from them! God bless you!!!!!

This is my first time here...Hi all...Does anyone, doctor or otherwise, know if a 250 pound man and a 35 pound 4 year old child can withstand the same force of a head blow? All things being equal, assume both are healthy, and the blow is not a specific intended blow to a specific nerve, muscle, or otherwise. Thanks to anyone who may can answer this.

Hey!
I could really relate to you, my little sister has had sz's since she was 11 months old due to a high fever. Her fever was 105 when she had her first seizure. She's 11 now. She gets them every time she misses a med. Dose or with strong emotions (exitements :d , fear Embarassed , happiness :d , etc). Doctors really don't know what her diagnose is, but their guesses are epilepsy, some characteristics of autism, and severe developemental delays. She takes 2 kinds of medicine every day, she's had 3 different surgeries, and 1 g-tube.
I have also heard that one can grow out of this. I have heard several people say that that the "grow out stage" is 12 to 14 years of age! Me and my mom are looking forward to these next couple of years :d . Well I think i've said enough. So every one who's going throuhg this hang in there. Your not alone.
God bless every one

Hi myra, with me having epilepsy I was very concerned when my son started having sz's as a baby. He would sz when we were going to fly. My husband was in the navy. We got orders for guam every time we went back and forth to the states my son would sz. I was stranded in san francisco for a week because he was running a high fever 105. He started szing so the doctor wouldn't let us fly. That lasted till we got stationed in hawaii for thee years. He never had another sz. He is now 27yrs. Hopefully your brother will grow out of it. God bless you and your family Smile
