Hi! I am the mother of a seven year old
who was diagnosed with epilepsy in the
form of absence seizures about a year ago.
She had to repeat kindergarden but once
we got her on her medication she did great
her second time around and was moved on up
to first grade. Now she is in first grade
and doing very poorly. I am very worried!
I think she might be having more
seizures. She seems to start on her
papers in class and maybe do two problems
and then the rest will be totally blank.
I have spoken to her teacher to see if she
thinks my daughter is having more seizures
but she doesn't know if she is or not. My
question is: is it common for a seizure
medication to be controling the seizures
for a period of time and then not work
anymore?

I also have absence seizures. I was on
ethosuximide and found that it would work
for awhile, but then it would stop working
and my doctor would up my dosage. If your
daughter is not responding well to the
medication, then you need to tell her
doctor so the problem can be remedied.
