Anyone else learn this song in elementary
school? I just thought about it and I
remembered it being a little graphic and
disturbing, but I figured maybe I only
remember it being that way because I was
only 8 or 9 when they taught it to us. I
just looked up the lyrics and some of it
is pretty bad...
Old mister johnson had troubles of his
own
he had a yellow cat which wouldn't leave
its home;
he tried and he tried to give the cat
away,
he gave it to a man goin' far, far away.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
the man around the corner swore he'd kill
the cat on sight,
he loaded up his shotgun with nails and
dynamite;
he waited and he waited for the cat to
come around,
ninety seven pieces of the man is all they
found.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
he gave it to a little boy with a dollar
note,
told him for to take it up the river in a
boat;
they tied a rope around its neck, it must
have weighed a pound
now they drag the river for a little boy
that's drowned.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
he gave it to a man going up in a
balloon,
he told him for to take it to the man in
the moon;
the balloon came down about ninety miles
away,
where he is now, well I dare not say.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
he gave it to a man going way out west,
told him for to take it to the one he
loved the best;
first the train hit the curve, then it
jumped the rail,
not a soul was left behind to tell the
gruesome tale.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
the cat it had some company one night out
in the yard,
someone threw a boot-jack, and they threw
it mighty hard;
it caught the cat behind the ear, she
thought it rather slight,
when along came a brick-bat and knocked
the cat out of sight
but the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
away across the ocean they did send the
cat at last,
vessel only out a day and making water
fast;
people all began to pray, the boat began
to toss,
a great big gust of wind came by and every
soul was lost.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
on a telegraph wire, sparrows sitting in a
bunch,
the cat was feeling hungry, thought she'd
like 'em for a lunch;
climbing softly up the pole, and when she
reached the top,
put her foot upon the electric wire, which
tied her in a knot.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
the cat was a possessor of a family of its
own,
with seven little kittens till there came
a cyclone;
blew the houses all apart and tossed the
cat around,
the air was full of kittens, and not a one
was ever found.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea
the atom bomb fell just the other day,
the h-bomb fell in the very same way;
russia went, england went, and then the
u.S.A.
The human race was finished without a
chance to pray.
But the cat came back the very next day,
the cat came back, we thought he was a
goner
but the cat came back; it just couldn't
stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

Yeah, I remember that. But I do not
remember it being so graphic. Holy caca!
Thats craziness!!
I know right! I can't believe none of
the parents complained... I remember
another song about this cat that had died
and then came back to life. One of the
mothers complained because she said that
her family believed the only person that
could come back to life was jesus. I
thought that was a bit of a ridiculous
complaint, but no one ever complained
about the other song!
Miss suzie had a steamboat was tiffaney's
favorite!

Yep, I remember that song. When you're a
little kid, you don't even realize it's so
violent! Lol. Here's another one, this
one was my favorite when I was a kid.
Oh senor don gato was a cat
on a high red roof don gato sat
he went there to read a letter,
meow, meow, meow
where the reading light was better,
meow, meow, meow
'twas a love note for don gato
i adore you wrote the lady cat
who was fluffy, white and nice and fat
there was not a sweeter kitty,
meow, meow, meow
in the country or the city,
meow, meow, meow
and she said she'd wed don gato
oh, don gato jumped so happily
he fell off the roof and broke his knee
broke his ribs and all his whiskers,
meow, meow, meow
and his little solar plexus,
meow, meow, meow
ay caramba cried don gato
then the doctors all came on the run
just to see if something could be done
and they held a consultation,
meow, meow, meow
about how to save their patient,
meow, meow, meow
how to save senor don gato
but in spite of everything they tried
poor senor don gato up and died
and it wasn't very merry,
meow, meow, meow
going to the cemetery,
meow, meow, meow
for the ending of don gato
when the funeral passed the market square
such a smell of fish was in the air
though his burial was slated,
meow, meow, meow
he became reanimated,
meow, meow, meow
he came back to life, don gato

that's the song they made us stop singing
because some kids mother thought jesus was
the only person/animal that could be
reanimated!

Many nursery rhymes have very dark origins
to them.. That's why many are reluctant
to teach kids them any more.. Go to this
site.. It shows the orgins of most
nursery rhymes..
