a Poem I Wrote

A teacher


you follow the dream you had
to make all the children glad
that they have somebody to love
someone sent from above

you welcome them at the door
and pick pencils up off the floor
they smile when they see you
they carry pain and sorrow too

through all the trials and errors
you group them in pairs
they don't always work,
but you know it can't hurt

you read them a book
most have an intrigued look
you tell them what to do
while handing out glue

you help them all
but they still call
teacher teacher look
i finished my book

they go outside to play
they listen to what you say
except for you ocassional few
who even those know what to do

you remind them what to say
for they don't know what's okay
you tell them to be nice
and prevent them from getting lice

you make sure they aren't bruised
you don't want to accuse
you hope they understand
they needed a helping hand

directions are given multiple times
now let's ring the chimes
all hands go up
it's time to clean up

they whine and moan
it's time to go home
i'll see you again someday
they don't know what to say

you laugh and cry too
while they look up to you
how fast the year's gone
but you know you'll get along

throughout the next few years
you see their laughs and tears
as they walk across the playground
you hope they feel safe and sound

you wave good bye
and let out a big sigh
for you know you've done your job
you try hard not to sob

they learned it all from you
the one who's always on cue
you are their teacher
their weekly preacher

for you know them inside out
you love them without a doubt
they are your reason
for each and every season
