Are Any of You An Emotional Sponge?

I swear I take on any and all feelings or situations I come across. From as simple as feeling tearful at a hallmark commercial, to feeling fear, and paranoia after someone shares of their severe abuse. I take it on and then I can't get rid of it.

Any suggestions on how to set up emotional walls so that my house doesn't collapse everytime the wind blows?

How do I say "no" to my sister who is bipolar also, when I am fragile myself? Shouldn't this intense abilitiy to empathize be used to our benifit?

I guess I just want to know if I am the only one or if this fluxuating passion and intense emotional reponce to outside influences belongs to the disease?

I am beginning to recognise just how much I do this.... I seem to not only take on other peoples emotions but also a lot of their personality like accent and mannerism when I am with them/talking to them. Its almost like I am not 'me'.. Just this big empty white canvas, or a chameleon taking on the colours of its surroundings. Unfortunately I can't offer any advice on how to stop this.

As for your sister.... Do you live with her? My father is very controlling but also needy and if I am not up to talking with him, I just ignore the phone when it rings and if its anyone else who I feel I am able to talk to I will phone them back, and I will call my dad when I feel better. Maybe try gently suggesting to your sister that she call an external helpline for advice sometimes. Or agree a code between the 2 of you so that you can both communicate when you feel unable to deal with the other... As I am sure if she is bipolar then she must have times where she feels the same as you?
