3 Surgeries And Still Hurting Posted: 10-13-03 00:42am
I slipped on ice back in 1998 and had my
first surgery in 1999, which was the day
surgery. I had to go back and have it
redone in 2001. I had more pain after
the second surgery and the dr finally did
a fusion to the l4-5 area 6 months later.
I am still having the leg pain and
weakness in the lower back but now they
say I have 2 more herniated disks in the
c5-6 and the t10-11 area. I have stopped
going to the chiropractor for adjustments
because it does not seem to help, but
cause more pain to the c & t level.
My question is, does anyone know what type
of treatments there are available for
herniated disks in the c and t areas?
They now have totally disabled me by
saying it is degenerative arthritis of the
spine. The pain meds they have me on is
only tylenol 3 and they do not even come
close to lessening the pain. Sorry for
the lengthy post.

Degeneration of Discs Posted: 10-13-03 04:01am
Dear jojo,
i am so sorry to hear that you are
suffering so much pain, I have watched my
husband go through the same thing
everyday, and he is taking pain meds but
they are never strong enough to contol the
pain. The only thing after pain meds I
guess are narcotics but my husband chose
not to go that way as he is not sure what
would be worse, the back pain or the
addiction to the narcotics. I'm assuming
your leg and back pain is due to the
herniated discs bulging against the nerve.
Have you ever considered having a micro
discectomy ? It is a procedure where the
surgeon removes just a very small piece of
the disc that is pressing on the nerve,
but they don't remove a whole disc or
anything. You are probably sick to death
of operations by now. Unfortunately
arthritis does set in after an injury to
bone, adding to your pain and discomfort.
There are other procedures that they are
in the process of testing with certain
patients in medical trials, called
titanium disc replacement. I don't know
if it is available yet or when it will be,
but the results so far are supposed to be
amazing.
