"we were having an argument when, without warning, my partner hurled a cup of scalding hot coffee in my face, then grabbed my head and smashed it against the doorframe cutting open my cheekbone.

Surely everyone would find this story shocking - yet when the victim called the police for help, the response was a curt "isnt it about time you learned to look after yourself"

any woman who had this experience would quite rightly be outraged and demand the protection she deserved. However men who are physically assaulted by their female partners face pain, injury but more the most painfull degrading thing of all the humiliation of ridicule.

Women it seems (as any pro lifer will know..Ad lib by izzy) are as capable of inflicting physical abuse as men. Mankind, a mens civil rights charity, recieves dozens of calls every weak to its helpline from men who suffer serious domestic violence from the women they live with.

"the level of violence used by woemn against there male partners is terrifying" says stephen fitzgerald of mankind. "the men who call us endure all kinds of abuse, from black eyes to being knocked unconscious and stabbed with kitchen knives. But the one thing they all ahve in common is a sense of shame. Because peoples first thought is always the same "well he is bigger than her so why dosnt he defend himself?" but the fact is for the vast majority of men, raising your hand to a woman just isnt on the agenda, even if she is half killing you.

Also women who abuse there male partners tend to be treated leiniently by the law - often recieving community service or probation for even extreme acts of violence. Yet a man who simply strikes a women even in defence will be in deep trouble.

Although most of us see domesic abuse as something men do to women, a 1999 goverment report tells a very different story. The study - the largest of its kind, found that 4.2% of men and 4.2% of women had suffered serious domestic violence - a small but equal minority, however domestic violence on a lesser note is vertually none existant from men in comparison to female abusers.

research shows that there is no particular type of man who suffers this abuse. It goes right across the spectrum just as with female victims.

Real talked to two men who suffered at the ands of their partners, and a woman whose anger got out of control.

Over the last three decades, women have adopeted an increasingly assertive role at home and in the workplace and its this, say experts, that has led the, to take on more traditionally male charicteristics psychotherapist gwen palmer has worked with men who have been abused by their female partners. She explains that the opportunities available to women today gives them more power than ever

"women becoming equal with men is obviously a healthy change insociety" says palmer "but with that power only few men abuse their power in a relationship, more and more women now with equal power are abusing not only there male partners but also a system built to (by men...Ad lib from izzy) protect women from men.

This can lead to them wanting to completely control their partner, which can translate into violence, they have to have everything their way and control everything in their ife, including their relationships. What feminism has helpped women achieve is by no way or means a samll victory but what women once hated about men, they themselves have become.
