Considering Partial Hysterectomy
Posted: 10-31-04 20:05pm

Just trying to do the research. I am 41 no children gone thru 13 years of infertility one ivf without success come to terms with a "child free" living. I was at the ob/gyn last week and they discovered 2 large ployps on my uterus. Rather than doing a d&c every couple of years and ending up pregnant at 45 I am considering opting for a partial, removing the uterus and cervix to prevent any place for cancer to form. Just looking for affirmation. Any response, positive or negative, appreciated.

Removing the uterus and cervix as a prophylaxis for cancer is not generally advised unless you have a strong cancer indicator (positive for hpv, gentic links). Do you have any reason to think that you are succeptible to cancer?

Polyps can be easily treated with d&c, and don't always recur.

Hysterectomy is a serious procedure that can have long-ranging health consequences. It is certainly the safest major surgery performed in the world, but is not something that should be entered into lightly for treating non-lifethreatening conditions.

Even if you keep your ovaries, sometimes the procedure itself can damage their blood supply to the point where they lead to early menopause. Early menopause/surgical menopause has been linked to higher incidences of heart disease.

For the record, I had a hysterectomy three months ago, with no complications (preserved ovaries and cervix). I had large and multiple fibroids and a polyp (i didn't know about the polyp until the pathology report). It's a serious procedure and if you dont' heal properly at the time of surgery, you can get adhesions and scar tissues that can cause problems with other parts of your abdomen. Many women experience some degree of sexual disfunction, either from damage to the nerves and blood vessels of their pelvic region or from shortening of the vagina when the cervix is removed.

For the best, first hand information, i'd recommend checking out hystersisters.Com and posting your story there and seeing what others can counsel you. Chances are there are some who have been through the exact same thing as you.

Take care.
