How Do I Know If I'm Depressed Posted: 11-01-04 16:58pm
This year has been tough for me. Lately
it seems like even when i'm with 7 other
people, I feel the most alone, and out of
place. Even when i'm volunteering and
around all these people, I try and put on
a smile, but once i'm back alone, I still
feel out of place. Its also hard because
I feel like I can't talk to anyone about
it. Nowadays, I either are helping out
my friends constantly trying to help keep
them alive and its wearing me down because
it makes me think whats the point of me
living. Also, for the last year i've
been cutting myself, because there has
been so much to deal with. One of my
friends tried to kill himself this summer,
my parents are alcoholics in denial and I
know they don't care how it feels because
when I tell them all they do is pity me
and tell me I need help. My nana died
this year and I just can't take it
anymore. For the first time in my life,
im failing almost all of my classes and I
just don't care about it anymore. I just
don't know what to do anymore. Help
Sounds like you are definetly experiencing
depression. If you talk to your doctor,
they will probaly prescribe you something
and refer you to a counsellor or "shrink".
If you do that, please remember to give
it a chance. These things take time to
work or it takes a few tries to find the
right "click" with a counsellor. Check
out all your resources and be patient.

Hi nahgem4,
i'm guessing from your posting that you're
rather young (high
school perhaps). A lot of the things
you're experiencing are definitely related
to your age. It's a very confusing time
in life. If you're cutting yourself, you
should definitely go talk to a school
counselor and your doctor as well, but you
need to talk to a specialist and let them
know what is going on in your life. If
your parents have a drinking problem, you
need to let a specialist know that as well
and perhaps they will suggest some sort of
aa family group for you to attend. I
feel bad for you and understand
dysfunction in the family because I had
the same sort of problems. The best
thing you could do for yourself is seek
professional help and also try and get
your grades up again and focus on school
and obtaining your diploma and go to
college. The better educated you are,
the better your life will be down the road
and perhaps a career in pyschology would
be a good avenue for you to help others in
similar situations. Get to a doctor and
find out what the headaches are for.
Dont worry about anything else right now
until you get your mental health and
grades back in check. The problems now
seem overwhelming, but believe me someday
this will pass and the best way to help
yourself is to do well in school and keep
your health. Think of how you would like
your life to be in 10 years and believe me
what you do now will determine if you
reach the goals or not. 10 years goes
really fast although at 15 or however old
you are, it seems like an eternity.
Please contact me if you need moral
support and please go see a
doctor/counselor asap! They are trained
to help you and they should help you
without judgement. Do it today! Good
luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, i'll try to bring up some of my
grades, but I don't really want to admit
to my parents to take me somewhere,
because i'll feel like they will never
leave me alone and watch me closely when
sometimes I just want to be alone. How
do I tell them to take me to a doctor when
I don't think I have as much as a big
problem as they do?

Oh believe me sweetie, you have a huge
problem. If you are cutting yourself,
contemplating suicide and thinking you are
depressed, don't you think that
constitutes a problem? Are your parents
reasonable people? Do you think they
care about you? If the answers are yes,
then believe me they would want to know
what's going on with you and they would
want to help.
I don't really know what else to say or
how to get you to comply, but if you
didn't think you had a problem, then you
probably wouldn't have been on this site
in the first place. I hope you change
your mind and speak to someone you trust
and get the help you need. Good luck
again.

Please Help Me Again Posted: 11-16-04 20:31pm
Hello again. I tried bringin up my
grades as much as I could. Starting this
term it hasn't gotten easier for me
though. I'm just trying to get through
each day at a time, but now people aren't
making it easier for me. Stupid girls in
my grade like to create drama, so she
yelled at me for about an hour, and talks
about me nonstop behind my back. I try
to brush it aside, but its tough when you
constantly find out what she says. Shes
turning a lot of ppl against me and I
just..Dont wanna get up anymore basically.
Also, one of my best friends thats a guy
's girlfriend hates me to death because we
are close, because he's one of the real
people I can tell almost anything to.
Shes even like i'm gunna kill her and I
had to talk to guidance it was one big
mess. I think shes harmless but shes not
making it any easier so all her friends
don't like me either. I'm just sick of
dealing with this stuff so last night I
started cutting myself again. I
hadn't done it since the summer, but that
was when all those things pilled up, much
like they are doing now. I just see no
point in getting up. If I tell anyone,
they'll make me go to some place and it
will be more harm than its worth and I
just wanna be left alone...By everyone
Please what do I do...Do I tell someone,
who do I tell, I can't tell the school but
I dont want ppl to look at me different
like they did before..Please help me

It sounds to me like you definitely have
some depression. You do have some tough
circumstances you are living with. I
think you definitely shoudl seek some
assistance.
Can you possibly speak to a guidance
counselor or nurse at your school to see
if you could get some help?
I hope the best for you. Sounds like
your parents are not very supportive being
alcoholics nad all.
Hang in there!

Hi, the only thing the guidance counselor
will do is lock me up...Which I know
because they have done it in the past to
others. I just don't want to get them
involved, and my parents I wont dare say
anything else to, cuz for one I think they
dont care, and for two...Its just
something they can talk about to the
family, and I can't tell my friends
anything because they'll freak out
again...I just feel like theres no1 I can
talk to..Its just hard..Who do I say
anything to, if anything ?

Hi nahgem --
depression is a bit tricky. By that I
mean that it can be related to a lot of
things, not just your nana dying, but
genes... You mentioned that your mom and
dad are alcoholics... They probably are
low on b12 as a result, and being low on
b12 can be a hereditary trait. My mom had
pernicious anemia, and I have a tendency
toward low b12.
That wasn't very clear, sorry. I actually
have some brain damage from extended low
b12... While my doctors were prescribing
antidepressants, my low b12 was causing
permanent nerve damage.
Here's something I learned that has helped
me: lines on fingernails tend to indicate
low b12... A sublingual b12 supplement
can be very useful and make a great
difference.... When I began having
regular shots, I was totally amazed at the
difference they made. I haven't switched
to sublingual lozenges yet because the
injectable cobalamin is so cheap and i'm
so financially challenged :d
but I think the sublingual is very
reasonably priced at walgreens...
The old way to diagnose a need for b12 was
to prescribe it and if it made a
difference, then the doctor concluded it
was needed...
