I was just wondering what you guys thought
about the shot. I was on the pill when I
fell pregnant (still am, 5mos) now im
looking for something effective, cheap and
easier to take after I have my baby. Have
any of you been on the shot? What do you
think about it? Thanks in advance!

My sister is on it through fam-pact and
its free and she takes it every three
months. And works great. Only side
effect is a little wieght gain. And you
dont get a period. That is what causes
the extra weight. That is a very
dependable form of birth control. And I
know it hurts because they poke you on the
butt cheek with it. And my sister says it
hurts a little bit. Hope that helps. Oh
and she likes being on it.

Did your sister gain a lot of weight while
being on the shot? Is it healthy to not
have a period?
Thanks for replying. :d

Thats what I was wondering, if it was ok
not to have a period, but it is. She
didnt gain alot of weight. She just stays
the same because she doesnt put effort
into anything, shes the queen of
laziness!! Lol.
My other cousin was on and she gained alot
of weight. Because she felt hungry so she
would eat. And she ate junkfood so it
didnt help.
Infact, if my sister kept track of her
eating and excersized, she would lose more
but she doesnt. So you should be fine.
Good luck!

Depro-provera for over 2 years. I gained
weight and didn't have a period, well,
regularly anyways. I still got bad cramps
whenever. Sometimes I got a period but
you never know when so you always have to
be ready.
I feel that the shot really changed the
consistancy and colour of my period. I
stopped cause of tthe cramps, but also
cause I was getting nervous cause I didn't
have any kids yet.
There are a whole wack of side effects
too. One that I didn't like was that if
you do happen to be one of the very small
percentage of women who get pregnant while
taking this, then you would hope that you
have a boy cause girls may show strong
male traits. I kept picturing a little
baby girl with a beard!
It's up to you though.

I've been on depo for 3 shots now, and
loved it at first. At the moment i've
been bleeding for about 2.5 weeks and it
shows no sign of stopping. My doc said
that every one will react differently to
depo so my suggestion is give it a shot.
I actually lost weight when I went on it,
but your appetite does increase a lot.
Just watch what you eat.
Good luck

after the shot got out of my system I have
been experiencing a discharge that won't
go away.Yea,it stops your period but the
side effects are dramatic.

Iv'e been getting shots for about a year
and got them between
children. No ,never got pregnant while on
depo. I believe its as
effective as having your tubes tied! I've
been on med's for years
for panic, anxiety and deppression so I
cant tell the difference with
the emotional side affects that depo is
known to cause, but I can
tell you that gaining wait ia a big one
and loss of periods.
They tell you that about after about a
year some women may resume
with there periods. In all honesty, I
like it. It's very covenient and I get
mine in my upper arm alternateing each arm
with each shot.
I didn't know that they give them in the
butt. It's worth it!
Good luck in your choice!!!

I have also been on depo before and I
found it a great source of birth control.
My periods also stopped and I gained a
little weight but that was from not having
any periods. I had them both in the arm
and butt cheek and both were extremely
painful and caused a little bruise but
nothing to worry about as I had low iron
at the time.
I have heard of women bleeding constantly
and falling pregant but like everyone else
I got worried about its affect on trying
to conceive as I have heard being on depo
makes it harder to conceive kids due to ur
periods stopping.
But I reckon give it a go if thats what u
want afterall it cant hurt to try.

I was getting the shot for a year (aug
'01-aug '02, 5 shots). My periods
stopped, and I gained almost 50 lbs. It
wasn't until about three months after I
stopped the shots that I was told that
depo works by "tricking" your body into
"thinking" it's pregnant (hence, no
periods and weight gain). Strangely
enough, I didn't have an increased
appetite but couldn't seem to get rid of
the weight. It took me 16 months after
my last shot to finally get a period and
35 days later, I still haven't gotten
another one. I also didn't start losing
weight until I got my period, no matter
what I did for 16 months, I couldn't lose
more than 2-3 lbs, then gain it right
back. I've recently made an appointment
with my dr to see if i'm still fertile or
not because my fiance and I have been
trying to get pregnant for 6 months now
with no results.
My advice, be careful because even though
depo may be convenient, the side effects
may not be worth it. Good luck with
whatever you decide!

I tried the depo shot and for me I didn't
like it.. I didn't gain any weight or
anything but I had my period for 3 months
straight non stop and it was usually
pretty heavy flow. I only got the one
shot but if I would have gotten another
one I would have bled for 6 months
straight and then after then third shot it
would have stoppped but bleeding for 6
months straight would have no been worth
it. The first month of the shot I felt
really weak because of all the blood I was
losing.. This does not happen to everyone
but it can so watch out ..

More Trouble Than Good

I took depo provera back in may 2003,
after being on the pill for a couple
years. I had tried it years before and
thought it would be ok. I weighed about
107 pounds when I got the shot, which was
low for my height, so I thought the extra
pounds (possible side effect) wouldn't
hurt.
After a month into the pill, I began
spotting lightly everyday and didn't stop
until the depo wore off. If I knew that
was going to happen, I would have delt
with having one period a month. So after
the one shot, I decided to get off the
shot. I had enough.
I also gained 30 pounds! I feel like I am
pregnant. I get symptoms of either my
period coming or pregancy from time to
time, but I am not. The tests were
negative.
Anyway, I had one "period" or one known
cycle after the shot, that was in october.
Every month it's a guessing game whether
it will come or whether I am pregnant.
It's frustrating, I haven't gotten my
period in three months now and I am
nausated, my breasts hurt, i'm fatigued
and my entire body aches.
I am wondering if I am getting symptoms of
a period, even though I am not getting the
actual period. But, my doctor just told
me today to take a pregnancy test and put
me back on the pill.
I don't know what to think. I just read
that it could take up to year to get my
period back. I never had any of these
issues before, I was always regular. It's
just not worth the trouble.

i have herd of ppl getting preg on the
shot but dont wory because like you can
have sex 24 hrs after getting the shot I
also had sex as soon as I got the shot and
I didnt get preg some ppl say they bleed
alot or just a little when on the shot but
like you I had no bleeding from the first
month I was on it so dont worry to much
chances are youre not preg but if you keep
worring you may convince yourself you
are......And sometime the sideeffects from
the shot sound like pregnancy
synptoms.......Net time you go for the
shot tell your doctor youd like a
pregnancy test before your next injection
to be 100% positive with yourself!!! :d

Questions Before Getting the Shot
Posted: 09-24-04 00:23am

Hey , my boyfriend and I have been
together for about 2 years and have been
having unprotected sex pretty much the
whole time. I know pre-cum can get you
pregnant, luckily I havent gotten pregnant
--is that common?--but lately have been
getting paranoid so we both decide I
should get on birth control. I'm planning
on getting the shot soon. I have a few
questions before doing so. Does it
matter if i'm on my period or close to
when I get the shot? Does it matter if
he cums inside me or could I still get
pregnant from that even tho i'm on the
shot. If I remember correctly I have to
wait at least a week after the shot before
having sex, right?
Please respond soon. Thank you
ashley

Yeah.. I haven't had my period in months.
When I first went on the shot I got my
period on time the first month but it
lasted 5 weeks! Then I got a second
period which lasted about 2 weeks or so.
But after I took my 3rd shot (and just
recently took my 4th) I have had no
periods other than a light one just before
I got my most recent shot.

Oh god, depo caused me to have the worst 3
motnhs of my life. (only got one shot)
had a 2 week period, then 2 weeks off,
then a 5 week period. I wished I was
dead. Infact, I thought about killing
myself a lot but I held it out. It made
me very depressed and I cried all the
time. I had to go home from school a lot
because of it. I doubt I would have
survived if my boyfriend hadn't been soooo
comforting to me. He was the one who told
me not to get another one. Which was a
very good idea. Now i'm on the pill, it's
so much better. But if you're lucky
enough not to get a period, then yay for
you. But I didn't get that reaction. 3
months is a long time to have to deal with
any side effects that may happen.
