Do I Need My Tonsils Removed Posted: 10-14-03 00:26am
I often have the sensation that food is
caught in my throat. Do I need my tonsils
removed. I am 47 and have had this
problem for about one year now.

I'm not sure if this would help at
all....I am 25 and had my tonsils out 6
months ago. I was sick for 4 straight
months with untreatable infected tonsils
so they finally had to be removed (doctor
said they were "putrid" once they were
removed and were basically rotting inside
me - not a pretty picture I know).
Anyways, after my surgery I definitely
noticed a difference when I swallowed. I
had problems with choking when I was
eating and whenever I drank something, it
would often come out my nose. It seemed
like since the tonsils were gone I had to
re-learn how to swallow because the
contours of my mouth had changed.
Possibly, if your tonsils are swollen, you
may be having the same problem. Are they
swollen? Have you been sick a lot in the
last year? It would probably be a good
idea to see your doctor. That way you
can find out if the problem lies in your
tonsils or if maybe it is something else
going on with your throat. I will tell
you though, having your tonsils out is a
very very unpleasant ordeal. Adults have
a horrible time after the surgery. It
was a week before I was off pain medicine,
two weeks before I was able to begin
eating solid foods and over a month before
my throat had healed enough that I could
open my mouth all the way. Try not being
able to yawn for a month...Not fun. I
would only suggest having your tonsils out
as a last resort. Try everything else
you can before considering it. Its a
miserable experience. Good luck - hope
you find out what is wrong.

Tonsilloliths Or Tonsil Stones Posted: 10-29-03 18:41pm
Hello sognoman,
i feel that I have the same problem. The
first time I noticed it, it felt like it
was food stuck in my throat. But
actually it wans't food at all. I went
to look in the mirror and saw a whiteish
spec on my tonsil. I removed it with my
fingernail. It had a very foul oder. I
get them every 2 to 3 days. I just take
them off. This article might help you
better understand what they are. The
correct medical term is tonsilloliths.
