Colon Cancer In 33yrold Male Have Questions Posted: 11-07-04 14:00pm
Last april my 33yrold ( at the time 32)
non smoking , non drinking hard working
husband , started developing severe lower
abdominal pain that would literally double
him upon waking.
They would last 10-15 minutes and then
disappear , finally made him go to the
docs and they treated him for everything
from a stomach infection = antibiotics,
spasmatic colon=antispasmatic meds, pain
killers etc. , ran blood tests , did
fecal test , prostrate test , but no other
tests where performed.
This went on for a few weeks with no
relief.
In fact the pain was now occuring
periodically throughout the day, no matter
what he ate, didnt eat , did , didnt do
etc.
Finally the doc set him up to have a
colonoscopy, unfortunately he couldnt get
in to be seen for 6weeks.
In the mean time the pain got so severe
one night that the doc told him to go to
the hospital asap.
After waiting around the hospital for
hours finally got back to be seen , they
asked for a urine sample which they never
touched it was still sitting there when we
left.
The doc pushed and prodded on husbands
stomach and then said he wasnt real sure
what was going on and gave him a pepcid
for heartburn , husbands pain was no where
near his upper stomach , was in the very
lower abdomen right above the pubic
area.
When he told the doc he didnt have
heartburn the doc said and I quote " well
it wont hurt you to take it "
grrrrrrrrrrr
finally the day came for the colonoscopy ,
the doctor and joe were back within
20minutes with the doctor telling us that
he couldnt do the scope because the colon
was blocked off with cancer.
Normal colon is the size of an egg , his
was smaller than a pea
next day husband went to the surgeon ,
operated on the 27th of sept,
they removed his sigmoid colon , and did a
resection,
they also removed 50 lymphnodes of which 3
showed cancer , and he also had cancer
seeds in the abdominal wall lining of his
stomach which made his cancer a stage 4
joe is scheduled tomorrow to have a port
put in for chemo , and to start chemo on
friday with the "cookbook" method?
We are looking for another oncologist
however , since this one gives us the
impression , that he isnt with us in this
, ( he was rushing us on our first
consultation last friday because he had
another appointment , this is what the doc
himself said)
the moral of this story is I do not care
how old you are if you have anyyyyyyyyy
symptoms that just arent normal for your
body go now and get a colonoscopy done ,
especially if your parent(s) had polyps.
My question is this since doc was in to
big of a hurry to answer it ,
does anyone know of the statistics of cure
for this type of cancer in a 33yrold
healthy male
the cancer is
adenocarcinoma signet ring cell type
poorly differentiated
colorectal cancer
thank you very much

Hi debbie - your husband's case sounds the
same as my husband's (although he is 20
years older). My husband was diagnosed 3
years ago and the prognosis was not good.
He participated in a clinical trial for
avastin, which I believe is why he is
still alive today. Avastin was approved
by the fda last feb. And is taken in
conjunction with chemotherapy. With the
newer chemos, they give antinausea drugs
and the side effects are minimal. My
husband was able to return to work and
took off on afternoons when he received
treatment. I have learned a lot in the
past 3 years about cancer and the kindness
of others, and I would highly recommend
that you find an oncologist in whom you
can have faith that he/she will be giving
you undivided attention.
Good luck to you and your family. I will
pray for you.
