Is There Any Truth In This Posted: 10-15-03 12:01pm
I have a coworker that sleeps at her desk
off and on during the day - when she knows
the boss is out. She says it's a
condition due to her diabetes. She is a
border line diabetic, does not take
medication - just watches her diet. Can
anyone tell me if there is any validity in
her excuse.

I don't know about being it being a
condition if she is border line. However,
when diabetics get high sugar levels we do
get sleepy. I also get sleepy if I have a
severe sugar low. It could be valid or it
could be a copout. It is hard to say.
Best of luck, kelly

Your co-worker is full of crap! First of
all, there is no such thing as
"borderline" diabetes. Either you are
diabetic or you are not. Levels anywhere
above the norm are considered diabetic.
When my blood sugar is high, I do get
sleepy but I have never fallen asleep
during work. One time my blood sugar was
over 500 and I worked just fine. Tell
her you don't buy it and if she doesn't
stop, you will report her.

Lets remember that everyone is differant.
My grandfather was had a blood sugar of
900 and drove himself to the hospital.
Not knowing it was his sugar, he said that
he just did not feel right. I can
sometimes feel find with a sugar of 500
and sometimes I feel awful if it is 200.
When my sugar is high I do become very
sleepy. As far as borderline diabetis, I
have heard this term for years. Recently
doctors, researchers and us diabetics are
saying either you or you'r not. I
personally feel that borderline is not an
accurate term.
