Help to Interpret Mri Results For Back Pain
Posted: 11-09-04 05:38am

I have back pain in my lumbar back for a couple of months. I am unable to walk quickly and can only climb stairs slowly. After climbing stairs, my back tends to slop forward. I was initially unable to bend backwards, but responded well to physiotherapeutic back exercises.

Below is my mri report for my lumbar back in full text. Thank you for helping me to understand what this actually means.

Sagittal t2, t1 weighted images of the lumbar spine as well as axial t1, t2 weighted images from l2 to s1 in separate blocks were acquired.

Report
======
reference made from c2 in labelling the lumbar spine with superficial marker placed at t12. The spinal cord ends at upper border of l2 returning normal signal intensity. No focal abnormalities are detected in the conus medullaris. Vertebral bodies return uniform signal intensity. There is mild decrease in the height of l5/s1 disc. No overt dessication of the discs is seen.

Diffuse ligamentum flavum hypertrophy is noted throughout the lumbar spine causing minimal thecal sac indentation ath the posterior laternal corner of the spinal canal.

Mild diffuse disc bulge at the l4/5 level with anterior thecal sac indentation. No significant lateral recess or exit foraminal stenosis is present. Similar changes are noted at the l5/s1 level.

Impression
==========
mild diffuse disc bulges at the l4/5 and l5/s1 levels causing minimal anterior thecal sac indentation. No significant central canal, lateral recess or exit foraminal stenosis is present.
