Acne From Medical Problems Posted: 11-18-04 07:45am
I have had acne all of my teenage years.
I am now 23, however it cleared up
slightly around 18 and returned severely
around 20. Some people dont realise the
medical problems that can cause acne. I
recently found out that I had an ovarian
tumour and I have had the ovary removed.
My skin has completley cleared up. The
hormone levels the tumor was creating
(androgen, male hormone testestrone) was
causing my acne. For females with adult
acne it is usually caused by an excess of
androgen production, pcos or ovarian
cysts, tumors or cancer. I would get
ultrasounds and hormone level tests if I
knew this before. There are hormone
treatments which can lower these levels of
androgens, to a normal female level, and
yes clear your acne up. Some dermos dont
seem to get this!
Accutane, expensive creams treatments etc
will do nothing to improve adult female
acne.

Thanks for that information. I have been
thinking about asking my doctor to do some
hormone tests on me. I am 26.. Have had
acne since 13. Birth control helps keep
it somewhat under control but I have other
reactions to being on estrogen. I figure
if taking hormones controls it, then it
must be a hormone issue.
