Is It Ok to Take Tylenol Pm? Posted: 11-19-04 18:32pm
I have to get up to go to work at 2am, so
I try to go to bed around 8pm. Well I
don't actually get to sleep until betwen
10 and 10:30. That only gives me around 4
hours of sleep each night, plus I get
about a 1 hour nap during the day when
kinzey takes her nap. Do you guys think
its ok for me to take tylenol pm to help
me sleep? Do you think it affects the
baby?

I know there is one over the counter med
you can take safely and I think it just
might be tylenol, is there anyway you can
contact your doctor to be sure?

mom if it was ok and she said yes, she
asked the doc that I go to (obgyn) so you

It is ok, tylenol pm has the same
ingredient as benedryl, and that and
tylenol are ok, so instead of taking both
take tpm.. But I don;t sleep very well
with that or benedryl, I will sleep hard
for an hr and then wake up a lot and sleep
hard in between all the wakings, and then
in the morning I feel like crap

Okay, so I have done my research now.
Tylenol pm contains diphenhydramine, and
acetaminophen.
Acetaminophen is used to reduce pain and
fever. Unlike nsaids (nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs), it lacks
anti-inflammatory activity. Acetaminophen
is available by itself or in
nonprescription and prescription-only
combination products used to relieve pain
and the symptoms associated with colds and
flu.
When used according to directions,
acetaminophen (the active ingredient in
tylenol) is considered safe for pregnant
women.
Care providers typically recommend
acetaminophen for almost every ache and
pain experienced in pregnancy. It has a
long record of safety.
.....................................
Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine used
to relieve allergic rhinitis (seasonal
allergy) symptoms including sneezing,
runny nose, itching, and watery eyes and
to relieve itching and swelling associated
with uncomplicated allergic skin
reactions. It is also used as a
short-term sleep aid, to control coughs
due to colds or allergy, and to
prevent/treat motion sickness.
Diphenhydramine is available in
nonprescription products alone and in
combination with other nonprescription
drugs, to treat symptoms of allergy,
colds, and upper respiratory infections.
Diphenhydramine may cause uterine
irritability or contractions near term
when used in high doses (greater than
50mg)
in 1974 saxen reported that a study group
of 599 infants with oral clefting were
more likely to have been exposed to
diphenhydramine during the first trimester
than a control group of infants without
clefting. Subsequent retrospective
studies of more than 2300 infants have
found no association between first
trimester exposure to diphenhydramine and
oral clefting or major malformations.
Stillbirth has been reported following the
use of diphenhydramine and temazepam
during human pregnancy. The toxicity of
this combination was confirmed in pregnant
rabbits.
.....................
Certain medicines should not be used
during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
However, other medicines may be safely
used in pregnancy or breastfeeding
providing the benefits to the mother
outweigh the risks to the unborn baby.
Always inform your doctor if you are
pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before
using any medicine.
there is no
information available about the safety of
this medicine during pregnancy. It is not
recommended for use during pregnancy.
Seek medical advice from your doctor.
this medicine may
pass into breast milk. It is recommended
to avoid the use of this medicine when
breastfeeding. Seek medical advice from
your doctor.
------------------------------------------
therefore, I wouldnt take it if I were
you. But hey, do what you want.

Regular tylenol is perfectly okay! It
only contains acetaminophen! Its the pm
you wanna avoid!
You can take extra strength tylenol
without a problem!
I talked to my doctor about sleep trouble
and he told me to take benadryl.

No aspirin is bad and can lead to reyes
syndrome if taken by under 21's. I was
always and still am scared by aspirin.
I hate taking pills if not needed (most of
the time)

regular tylenol only contains
acetaminophen which has been proven to be
safe during pregnancy.
Whereas, benadryl and tylenol pm contain
diphenhydramine which has not been proven
to be safe during pregnancy. But it
hasn't been proven to unsafe either...They
can't prove for sure if the effects are
from the diphenhydramine.
None-the-less...The less medication you
put in your body the healthier baby your
likely to have!

I agree- the less medication, the better,
but I wouldnt stress over taking tylenol
pm, like I said before, I was told it was
ok. My mom is the nurse for the ob I go
to, and he said no problem.
Since i've been pregnant i've taken
regular tylenol once and immodium ad once.
I'm paranoid about pills, but I still
drink coffee (provided I drink much less
coffee than I used to). It's funny the
things we deny and allow ourselves. My
doctor doesn't seem to worried about my
lifestyle. Everything's going great so
far. Hey, it's past midnight, i'm 32
weeks today.

Now, I dunno if the chemical make up of
drugs differs from country to contry (i
guess it could as they have their own
governing guidelines and stuff) I was
assured benadryl was 100% to take during
pregnancy

I was told by my dr that tylenol pm is
fine, just not to get into a habit of
taking it. I took it last night because I
have an absessed tooth that prevents me
from sleeping, last night if the first
i've actually slept in 4 days.
