To all those who just found out there are
pregnant and stuck ---i hope you know
about the wic program. When I first
found out I was pregnant I heard about it
and went to my local health department and
signed up for it. They are awesome
there! They give you free coupons for
healthy food so you can eat good while
pregnant (name brand foods too!) then they
also coordinate you with a social worker,
nurse, dietician, and give you free
coupons to birthing classes and nursing
classes and such. Its awesome! I just
got back from an appointment with my nurse
and I love going there. I am able to
tell her anything I want to and have grown
a special relationship with her. I hope
all those who are scared can check this
program out!! Just some advice.....

I would think you would be! I dont think
there is an age limit or anything.....But
when are you due? Dont you only have like
8 or 7 weeks left or somthing?? I would
check it out soon so if you can get on it,
get it before your baby is here!

Do I have to bring a parent/legal gaurdian
since im under 18? 'cuz when I had to
apply for insurance here they made me
bring my aunt as my legal gaurdian. And
it sucks 'cuz she can never take off work!
And I have the wic refferal and
everything already.
Yup, I have about 7 weeks left, i'm
33wks2days. Due january 7th.
Sooooon I hope. I gotta make an
appointment soon. Is it true that they're
only open one day out of the whole month?

Nikki (mommabear) knows a fair bit about
wic (i think she claimed/claims it) and I
expect chanda and erin would be able to
tell you quite a bit as well.

Yep--they give you coupons for the baby
once she is born. And I dont think they
are only open one day a month...I would
hope not anyway! Everyplace is diff, but
they are open 7 days a week here in my
city, well maybe not sunday. I would
just go to the health dept in your town,
if you can get there! And ask them all
about it, they will help you. I dont
htink you have to bring parents consent, a
lot of girls dont have parents...So who
knows

i'm not sure if your mom would have to
accompany you, and I am sure you are far
enough a long to see that you are preg,
but just in case, take your mom and proof
of pregnancy, also proof of address, like
mail or your current id card, they will
give you wic for now, and tell you to call
them to schedule an appt to get the baby
certified as soon as you can after she is
due and you will continue to get wic for
yourself for so long depending on whether
or not you are breastfeeding will
determine how long you continue getting it
for yourself, and you will get formula for
your baby in the beginning 9unless you are
breastfeeding of course, but if you do
both i'm not sure how they work that out)
and then as the baby grows older you get
cereal and juice and other stuff, b4 long
your baby will be getting the same stuff
you will get for yourself in the
beginning. And they give it to your
child as long as she is elligable until
she is 5 yrs old
hope that helps

Speaking of which I just applied the other
day and they gave me all kinds of stuff,
first the vouchers they gave me were for
like 5 gallons of milk, 2 dozen eggs, a
pound of cheese, some peanut butter, like
6 things of juice, and cereal and they
give them to me each month then after the
baby's born they will give me formula each
month even though I am going to
breastfeed, and they gave me coupons and a
bunch of condoms (lol) hey but they say
after the baby is born the last thing you
want to happen is to get pregnant again!
But the program is awesome!

I understand though that they only give
you vouchers for basic formula, if you
need a special formula then you have to
prove it's necessary or pay extra or
something - heather had to get special
formula for mackenzie (noodleandshorty)

Eligibility is based on income and a lot
of places are only open one or two days a
month. Around here I am pretty sure they
are open one day a month.
If you live with your
mother/father/boyfriend, whatever, it goes
by the combined income (and rightfully
so). A friend of mine made like $8.00/hr
and her boyfriend made $10/hr and they
weren't eligible. So if your parents
make pretty good money and you live with
them then you probably won't be able to
get it. But all areas are different and
it is hard to tell.
If you need help then it is definately
worth signing up for as that program was
designed for women who need help.

I had wic with my son while pregnant and
after (for his first year) and then I
stopped. I will do the same this time,
too. Since formula is sooo expensive.
But if this boy is anything like his
brother, I will end up having to get an
extra case a month anyway. Piggies I
have!!
My local wic office is open 5 days a week
but you can only go to them by appointment
only. I qualified because im on medicaid,
too. Now all I need to do to make my
state help complete, is get food stamps!
Lol

I thought so, but I was just making sure!
 yeah, it can be
tough. Very tough. It is hard enough
without kids, I cannot imagine the
financial strain with them.
