I have a friend who was diagnosed with the
childhood form of leukemia (all) when she
was about 22 or 23. She has had a
very long and painful battle with this
illness. She has been fighting this
disease with everything she has for a
little over two and a half years. She
initially went through chemo and was in
remission to find out not long after that
the leukemia had returned. Her next
option was the bone marrow transplant.
Her brother was a match and donated what
she needed. She again thought she was
in the clear but later found she had
gotten gvhd (graft versus host disease).
This can be just another obsticle on
the way to recovery and she believed it
was. Not long after the diagnosis of
gvhd she had a stroke and they found that
she has a tumor on her spine and also that
the leukemia has returned. She has
run out of options basically. Her mom
was told that if she went through the
chemo again to do another transplant it
might kill her and if it didn't the
chances of the transplant being succesful
were less than 10%. She has opted to
be at home with her 4 year old son and her
family and enjoy the rest of her life
without any treatment. The only meds
she takes are for pain. My question
is if anyone knows of any wish making
organizations that either cater to adults
or grant wishes for children with
chronically ill parents? My now 6
year old daughter also has leukemia and
she got to make a wish through the
make-a-wish foundation but I believe they
only cater to children with the illness.
I just thought it might be nice for the
child to be able to have a very special
memory with his mother that he can always
remember. If anyone has any
information on this please reply.
Thank you in advance. Jennifer
