In 1976, I was diagnosed with epilepsy.
In 1994, it was determined that I was a
canidate for surgery by shand's teaching
hospital, here in florida. The surgery
came off great, with only one side effect,
my memory has gone from bad to worse.
I realize that auras post surgery are the
norm, but do they ever go away?
After having 5-6 gran mal seizures / day
for 18 years, I am happy with the results,
and am willing to live with the auras,
however, in the last couple of years, they
have gone from lasting for 30-60 seconds
and quite severe [couldn't hold a
conversation, thought, etc.] to being not
bad at all, can carry on a conversation
during one now, but the are lasting much
longer, 5-8 minutes.
Do these ever go away, or are they for the
rest of my life. I also realize, "your
results may vary", but has anyone ever
heard of them going away permanently?
Last question, should I stop riding the
motorcycle for the time being? Not that
they have effected me that way [ I have
never had either seizure or aura while on
the bike or in the car ]
after the surgery I was told that they
occur, but doc was fuzzy on how long they
would last or if they would change in
nature, I just assumed they wouldn't
thanks

Hi mastiff,
welcome to the board and a happy
thanksgiving. I am 59 and have a seizure
disorder too. I have partial
complex-abscense seizures. I am no expert
but sounds like what you are talking about
is a side effect of your surgery. I would
advise making an appointment with your
neurologist as soon as possible to check
out what is going on. I seriously
recommend not driving, I know I in this
state can lose my license in a blink of an
eye if I have one. For your safety and
that of others stay off the bike. Hope
everything works out for you.
