Tmj And Now Teeth Removal Posted: 12-03-04 14:27pm
Hello,
my story begins with years of having
jaw problems ,im told its tmj and have
been having weird problems associated with
tmj that I never would have though of and
wish I had seen a dental expert in 1999
when it all started. Ive had constant
dizziness and vertigo, ear fullness and
whistling or buzzing sounds in my ear.
Mind you when the vertigo was checked I
was told I have positional vertigo but
thats another story. Last year I had a
bad case of the spins ,i was told I had
menieres, saw my ent and had also mention
that my jaw and neck were very
painfull, could it be tmj because I had
read it somewhere, well he recommended a
dentist that specialises in tmj and sent
me for a mri, the mri showed liquid in my
sinuses and that would explain why I was
always conjested, he wanted to clean out
my sinuses and I said no because I would
always have sinuse problems do to
enviromental allergies and it would just
be making my sinuses bigger giving more
space for more sinuse problems. I saw
the dentist he recommended and he said it
was tmj and that all the problems I was
having was associated with tmj. I had to
wear a mouth guard because I clench my
teeth and have an overbite. Its been 8
months and ive been feeling worse. I saw
my regular dentist and he checked out my
teeth, took x-rays of jaw and teeth and
have decided that my teeth need to be
removed and full dentures are recommended.
In a way im glad because my teeth have
been bothering me for years, my teeth have
many cavities but they are not seen from
the outside and my teeth are pushing on
the nerves because I clench so hard and
that makes the pain worse.
Now you have my story. What I want
to know is how long does it take to get
use to denture and what should I expect
from wearing them.....
I will be doing this in feb/05 and they
will put me to sleep to have it done. I
have to wait for my gums to heal and then
they will do what needs to be done to make
my dentures making sure I get the correct
bite.
Would like to hear from anyone who is a
denture wearer, thanks .

Hi,edna.Sorry to hear of your
problems.Having dentures can vary from
person to person. Some people get them and
are fine from day one.Others need several
adjustments over several months.Why is
your dentist waiting for your dentures??I
am a dental assistant and we always have
immediate dentures for our full mouth
extractions! So much nicer to wake up and
have teeth, than none at all.I know that
there is considerable shrinkage of the gum
tissue in the first several months
afterward,but having your teeth made
immediately is so much easier for you to
transition into dentures,than to wait
several weeks and then have them made. This
step does mean that you will need to have
a new set of teeth made in the next year
or so ,but our patients are more than
happy to do this.I hope everything goes
well for you.Patty

Hi patty,
thanks for the reply. Thats what I
wanted to do, have my dentures put in as
soon as my teeth are removed but I wasnt
given a deffinate answer as to why the
wait , except for the healing and proper
fitting, it has something to do with my
tmj problem. I am on soft foods at the
moment so that wont be a problem without
the teeth, all I want is for a quick
healing and less pain as possible. I
would think it would be very uncomfortable
to wear dentures when your not completly
healed? Again thanks for the reply

Yes,there will be more adjustments when
you have immediate dentures, but well worth
it for the patient. We always give our
patients immediate dentures after
extractions. There is going to be soreness
anyway and having some teeth is important
for your self-image.Losing all of your
teeth is traumatic and having teeth in
place when you wake up is a definate
plus.Good luck to you.Patty

Hello patty, its been three weeks since my
teeth extraction and ive seen my dentist
one week after and he told me that my gums
were healing great but not to use salt as
a rince to use diluted mouthwash. Ive
noticed that when I slide my tongue over
my bottom gum it feels picky (sort of
bumpy like) and when I touch the gums they
are still very sensitive, is it possible
that piece of teeth are still stuck inside
my gums? I was told that this could
happen. I dont see my dentist till the
end of april, I though it would botther me
not having my teeth right after extraction
but im glad I waited, I never would have
been able to keep the dentures in when my
gums were bleading for three days , it was
gross but from what I was told the roots
of my teeth were infected and it didnt
show in the xray's. My dentist told me
that it was a good thing to have them all
removed, what I wanted to hear after 6
years of pain. Im still trying to get my
jaw to relax , its been 16 months since
ive been told I had tmj and it doesnt seem
to get better, but since the removal of my
teeth I have less pain in my jaw and
havent had a headache , since the
extraction, so thats a good
thing..........

Sounds like you are doing well.Yes,small
fragments of tooth could work their way up
through your gums during the next few
weeks.If it is really bothersome,your
dentist should be able to see you to
remove them.Glad it worked out for you!

Hi edna
how are you doing? Have you been fitted
with your dentures yet and if so how are
you adjusting to them. I waited 3 months
post extractions and found that route
worked better for me. My gums healed
well and most of the resorbtion had taken
place by the time I got my dentures which
meant they fitted beautifully.
Hope you're doing well and that life with
falsies has proved to not be too
challenging.
