Swollen Glands

Hi everyone,
i'm really frustrated & confused. I need to vent and am also looking for answers. I still have this annoying picc line in my arm and have been giving myself intravenous antibiotics for 2 weeks now to treat a badly infected skin lesion. I was soooo hoping to get this line out when I go to the doctor on wed., but today I found several swollen glands in my neck. My throat is feeling a little sore. How could I have been on strong antibiotics for 2weeks and have this happening to me? My infected lesion looks completely healed, but if there's another infection brewing somewhere, I doubt i'll be rid of this thing by day after tomorrow. Any one know much about antibiotics?

Did you doctor say you have an infection or are you having a reaction because of the lupus?

Sometimes, because it only occurs in about 10% of lupus patients, you can have swollen lymph nodes (and I mean huge) and it is not an infection.

Also, there are gram (+) and gram(-) bacteria, if you were given the antibiotic without the bacteria being identified, then you not getting better could be because of that...You needed a different antiobiotic.

Have you talked this over with your doctor?

I'll be thinking about you!

My original infection for which i've been taking the vancomyecin was cultured and identified as a staph infection--one of my lesions became infected. That looks completely healed now, so the antibiotics worked. I guess my sore throat and swollen glands were able to develop because that particular antibiotic isn't effective on whatever the problem is. All I know is that I feel awful tonight. I have a doctor's appt. Tomorrow, so I guess he'll figure out what to do with me. I just hope I can get the picc line out.

Hi lizbet,

my lymph nodes swell up all the time without warning. I could be because of stress or infection but most of time the swelling goes down on its own. Usually when I get the flu or some other flare they will swell. I happens under my arms and in my groin. Sometimes my underarms and the sides of my breasts will get so sore that I can't put my arms down. I not trying to discourage you on the contrary it's good to know that it may not be infection. Smile

i also know that when I am taking prednisone I tend to get a lot more infections as a side affect. I know that sound weird but it's true. If I am taking prednisone for a flare my chances of developing a chest infection are really good. It's funny because prednisone is part of the treatment but I will also end up on antibiotics. Confused

I hope your doctors appointment goes well!!

Cheers,

Antibiotics

Hi all, am I wrong, but my understanding about antibiotis is that they kill the good bacteria, as well as the bad.
I was told once that while the antibiotic is killing one problem another one could be brewing in another part of your body that might need a different type of antibiotic.
I was also warned that having lupus could cause it to be a vicious circle.
When my doctors in the past have given me an antibiotc, it's usually a powerful one so this won't happen. It also seams to be the most expensive one!

Antibotic
Posted: 10-24-03 01:04am

I went through every antibotic under the sun...
They started immune suppression treatment then
every time I turned around I had a new infection.

I learned one thing very quickly... Avoid anything that
could lead to a possible infection. Another thing I know
for certain... Take care of your teeth..

Sound weird huh? Its a quick way to go septic... One good
abcess and things get ugly.

Sarcoidosis Might Be What U Have Going On
Posted: 10-24-03 08:25am

Hello,
i have been doing research about autoimmune diseases online and
because I have been dealing with what you have going on....But my problem is I don't know how to get my doctor to listen..He diagnosed
me with hoshimotos about 3 years ago since then I have had surgery
to remove a toxic goiter (they ended up taking my complete right lobe)
i recently have been dealing with, swollen lymph nodes in me neck, shortness of breath with wheezing, dry and bumpy skin, extreme dry eyes and mouth, insomnia, fatigue, swollen feet and ankles and most recently 3days now stabing pains in my lower left side. I am so sick of doctors who just disregard these things. Mad I am currently taking synthroid .175 mlg.....I feel after doing research that I might have been misdiagnosed and actually have sarcoidosis if I was you I would at least mention it to him/her and do your own research you might be suprised what you find ps. I to went through antibiotics galore...You might what to have doctor check your enzymes and t cell counts. Good luck I feel your frustration ....Paula

Just to update you--i got my picc line out on wednesday, so i'm off the vancomyecin. That Dr. Didn't really seem concerned about my other symptoms, so I just decided to wait and call my rhuematologist if I got worse. I did get worse, so he put me on augmentin for an upper respiratory infection. I feel like someone is sitting on my chest! So, i'm home from work again today! Good thing I have sick leave.
