mom allegedly cut off baby's arms
faces capital homicide charges

dena schlosser, 35, was charged with
capital homicide.
Plano, texas (ap) -- a woman with a
history of postpartum depression cut the
arms off her baby girl who later died,
authorities said.
Dena schlosser was sitting in her living
room covered with blood when police
arrived monday. Her almost 11-month-old
daughter lay fatally injured in a crib in
a bedroom of the family's apartment in
plano. The child was pronounced dead
shortly afterward at a nearby hospital.
Police have charged the 35-year-old mother
with capital homicide, but declined to
reveal where she is being held.
Schlosser, who had a history of postpartum
depression, had been investigated on child
neglect allegations earlier this year, but
texas child protective services had
recently closed a seven-month
investigation, concluding that schlosser
did not pose a risk to her children.
Neighbors said she seemed to be a loving,
attentive mother.
"there were never any indications of
violence with this family," agency
spokeswoman marissa gonzales said. "the
children had always been healthy, happy
and cared for."
but, on monday, authorities discovered a
grisly scene at the family's apartment
after the child's father called a day-care
center, and asked them to check on his
wife and daughter.
Day-care workers called 911 after talking
to the mother; an operator then called
schlosser.
Asked if there was an emergency, schlosser
calmly responded "yes," according to 911
tapes released by police.
"exactly what happened?" the 911 operator
asked.
"i cut her arms off," schlosser replied,
as the hymn "he touched me" played in the
background.
"you cut her arms off?" he repeated.
"uh huh," she answered.
It was not immediately clear what
instrument was used to sever the baby's
arms or why the child's father called a
day-care center to check on his family.
Schlosser lived at the apartment with
other family members, including her two
older daughters. Authorities said the
girls, ages 6 and 9, were at school when
police arrived, and that their father was
at work.
No one answered the door monday night at
the family's apartment in suburban dallas.
Children's bicycles rested near the
entrance along with angel garden statues.
Neighbors said schlosser took her children
swimming in the summer, had picnics in the
courtyard and walked her baby around the
complex the same time each afternoon.
Dena livingston, 43, said she saw
schlosser making her rounds with the
stroller on sunday. Two days earlier,
she saw schlosser waiting with the baby
outside the elementary school where her
two other daughters attend.
"she didn't give off like she was in a
distant world or didn't care about the
baby," livingston said.
Livingston's husband, brad, added: "to see
her with the girls, you would just think
she was a great mother."
child-protective officials were
interviewing schlosser's daughters and
would talk to the father before deciding
whether to remove the girls from the home.
In january, the agency was called to the
home after schlosser was seen running down
the street, with one of her daughters
bicycling after her, authorities said.
When officials arrived, the child told
them her mother had left her 6-day-old
sister alone in the apartment.
Schlosser appeared at the time to be
suffering from postpartum depression and
having a psychotic episode, gonzales said.
Schlosser was hospitalized, and later
agreed to seek counseling and saw a
psychiatrist, gonzales said.
"at the time we closed the case, we had
been assured that mom was stabilized and
that she was not a risk to herself or her
children," geoff wool, spokesman for the
family and protective services department,
said.

Psychotic breaks are scarry. When women
have experienced ppd, they should receive
a lot of support to prevent the risk of
sliding into such psychological chaos.
It is stuff like that, that makes me
question bringing a kid in to this world!
How sad that they didn't keep in touch and
watch her to make sure she was realyy
cured!! Sick b**ch. She'll get her's!!

What I wanted to know was why the arms,
was the baby wanting to be picked up a lot
or something?
I know rhe and oli both went through a
stage like that and it can get
aggravating, but damnit, are you serious?

what I wonder is this: I
have read and heard how bad ppd can be and
I pray to god I never get it. I wouldn't
wish it on anyone. But to break to the
point of cutting your babie's arms off or
killing your baby, doesn't that take some
sort of sick twisted
individual.
that si where you end up
with post-partum psychosis which is more
severe that ppd. The yates woman in tx,
the one who drowned her kids to save them
from the dangerous world she perceived,
she had post-partum psychosis.

wake up to
reality. It's discrimination to tell us
we can't put up a merry x-mas display
morons.
you should be able to do
so, except if it is done through public
institutions.

I cant beleive some people are that sick.
Her husband must have known something was
up, since he called someone to check on
her. I didn't hear about that story til
just now and it makes me so sad!

I did hear about it. I have suffered
from ppd, no where near that degree. My
husband has helped me a lot. He comes
home and takes the kids and gets up with
the baby at night. Being with other moms
helps too. I cried when I heard about
that poor baby girl.
I do know about all the varying degrees of
psychological disorders but I still think
she is a sick b*tch! Andrea yates was a
faker..She knew what she did!! She
threatend it before! It was a
premeditated act!! They knew the woman
was sick. I blame the health care
officals and her husband!! He should have
never left her alone!!

It is sad to note that the mind can crack
@ any given time and we are not able to
control our minds at given times, their
are many types of multiple personalities,
their are more on the streets and living
in regular family settings than their are
in a psych wards and psych homes. Look @
john hinkley jr. And charles manson. I
new of a lady that was a super smart lady
and one day she thought that she was a cat
and all of these dogs were attacking her,
she just went off into another world one
day and never returned, come to find out,
she was under a lot of stress with her
job. We live in a very sick society as a
social service worker, I see a lot of sick
and sad things that happen, their is a lot
of things that happen that we cannot
control, thanks to the messed up system we
have now a days!
Sincerely,
sandy

if you know about them,
how can you blame her for being
psychotic?

yates was under the
delusional belief that the world was going
to harm her kids, and that the only way to
save them from incredible suffering was by
killing them herself. Yes, she knew that
she was killing them, if that is what you
mean, but she was severely mentally ill.
The whole mindset behind her action was
floridly psychotic. How can you call
that "faker"?
This was not normal ppd, but rather was
post-partum psychosis. Those two are
very different things.

That is a horrible thing, but no woman in
her right mind would do something so awful
to her children.Notice I said in her right
mind.Post partum depression is a very real
illness and still some doctors tell women
to just be happy and enjoy their babies! If
they had a choice they would!I had a very
good friend who delivered in june this
year and had a terrible time
afterwards. She told me she had every
reason to be happy, yet she was so
overwhelmed and sad.I asked her if she had
told her doc.She did and stopped
breastfeeding so she could get on some
meds. She is much better now and enjoying
her son.Too many women stay silent and do
not get the help they need. This is a real
illness and the shame needs to be
removed,so this does not happen again and
again.Patty
