Question...long....

Hey ladies for those of you who noticed I have not been on in awhile...I am due march 5 and I started having contractions on nov 22nd and my cervix was opened a little at my doctors appt and so I went to the hospital and they got them stopped with terbutaline so I got to go home but I had to follow up on the 24th so I went back to my doctors office and they hooked me to the machine and I was having contractions again and so I got sent back over to the hospital well the terb shots didn't work and so they gave me mag-ox by mouth and they still didn't stop so I got an iv and I got magnesium sulfate and had to be admitted I was also taking terb by mouth and when the doctor checked me I was 1cm dilated and so they did an ultrasound of my cervix and it was thinned to 1.66 cm and the doc said they like to see it atleast 2cm thick and thats at the very least so they gave me steroid shots for the baby and the did the fetal fibronectin test and it came back positive so they called musc cuz they have the nicu and they said that if they could keep me stable (no contractions) then I could go home in 72hours and that was on sat nov27 so I had to atleast stay until tues ...So I was stable and so they sent me home on bed rest..Well I had my doctors appt yesterday and everything looked good and my doctor measured me with that little tape measure thingy and said I was measuring 29-30 weeks so my question (finally) is does that mean just my uterus is 29-30 weeks or the baby is measuring 29-30 weeks or do they go hand in hand if the uterus is then the baby is?? If anyone can tell my id appreciate it thank you

Usually when they measure ur stomach, its just ur uterus. Because you could have large amounts of amniotic fluid or small amounts. They can only determine the size of the baby via ultrasound. They can give an approximate estimate of the bbays weight... If they look at your last ultrasound and compare and see how hes growing. I hope everythings okay hun!

Not true...My drs was able to tell how much my child weight before he was born....Just my feeling my stomach. She told me between 7lbs and 7lbs 5oz. And I had a 7lber!! Smile and an u/s isn't going to be all that accurate on teh weight of the baby either. A friend was told she was going to have a near 11lb baby and she only had a 9lb 7 oz baby, and that was done via u/s. Smile

When they feel your belly they are feeling for the "fundus" which is the top of your uterus.
They know how much it should grow by certain dates and within parameters they can give approximations on weight.
So you are both technically right.

Like say you were 34 weeks and your fundus was at x measurement then your baby would be average sized but if your fundus was at z measurement then your baby would be looking large for the gestation.

It's all educated guesses.

Yeah anything they predict about the weight can be off by up to a pound in either direction, even more for a big baby, no matter what method they use to predict, u/s or just feeling.
