Two Last Names! Help!
Posted: 12-07-04 19:50pm

My wife kept her last name when we go married. Ok. Now that she is pregnant, we are faced with a decision--which last name does the baby get? We have a stalemate. Any ideas? Thanks Smile

If ur wife's name would work as a middle name, u could do that and have the baby have ur last name. My friend's mom did that. She gave her son her last name (ross) as his middle name and gave him the father's last name. Sometimes it works out pretty well that way. Another friend of mine did that with both her kids. They each have two middle names (the second one being "smalcel" for both of them) and they got their daddy's last name. Good luck Smile

Thanks For the Thoughts So Far

I too would like to use my (dad's) last name and give the baby her last name as the middle name, but she's a very strong feminist and has not budged from her position that using the male last name is a sexist tradition. I'm not going to argue that point, I just want this issue resolved!

Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

Why dont you just use both last names, so it could be baby's first name, middle name, mother's last name, father's last name

You could hyphenate the two last names so they bocome one for the child.

I would say either hyphonate the name or use the dad's last name. I also believe that even though that it is traditon your wife should have your name so you wouldn't have this problem and it connects you all together

I would agree, if she's that much of a feminist, then you should hyphenate the two last names, or use her last name (or yours) as a middle name. So, say the kids name is jason, your last name is brown and her is mitchell....

It could be jason cameron brown-mitchell
jason mitchell brown
jason brown mitchell

meh, i'm traditional in most ways, so I took my husbands last name...

Hello, I was reviewing this thread as I was looking for info on the use of 2 surnames, called 'apellidos', used in the spanish culture. A suggestion, taken from my religious groups traditions, is to give sons their father's last name, and daughters their mother's, making the unused name of the other parent a middle name. Personally, I would use the 1st half of the above suggestion and put the other last name at the end, hyphenating the 2 (or simply put a space in, but sometimes that's confusing to other people; let them be!).

Or, as i've thought about this further, you could just come up with a completely different last name, but that does sever continuity with ancestors. Or, do as the scandinavian countries have done in the past: john's son= johnson, mary's daughter =marysdottir (see icelandic)

I would say baby should take dads last name.....Because if baby takes moms last name then it would look like the baby was conceived out of wedlock.
