Sudden Lower Back Pain
Posted: 12-10-04 10:52am

I am an 84 year old man. In my sixties I began to get a sudden lower back pain (more toward my left hip) about once a year. I still get it today. The pain comes on sharp out of nowhere (although I usually get it when the weather changes and turns cold). I'm typically stuck in bed for ten days. When I lay, the pain is tolerable, but when I get up, it's terrible. And then after ten days of laying, I can usually get up again, slowly, and then it passes for about a year. During the year I have no chronic back pain. I was prescribed antiinflammatories and given an mri that showed slight arthritis in the disk, but the doctor said that's not causin it. What can this be? Nobody seems to know. Does anyone seem to have a similar pain? I would love some more info. I'm stuck in bed right now for about two weeks. -phil
