Degenerative Disc Disease And Scheurmann's Posted: 10-22-03 17:11pm
Hello. I am hoping someone out there
knows how to help me. (actually someone
is writing this for me because I am in so
much pain, it is hard for me to sit at my
computer.) I am a 45-year-old male with
excrutiating back pain. It began four
years ago around the time my mother got
cancer (she has since passed away). I
have been diagnosed with degenerative disc
disease and sheurmann’s disease. I have
tried many conventional and alternative
forms of therapy with no relief. I also
take care of myself diligently being a
vegetarian, non-smoker, non-drinker, very
spiritual, etc. Most recently, I received
an epidural and it didn’t help at all. I
am nearing the end of my rope with this
pain. Has anyone been significantly
helped with this kind of pain? Thank you.

Confetti, I have also been through what
you are going through now. I am only 39
and have had 2 back surgeries. It all
started with degenerative disk disease and
bulging discs. I have been through the
steroid injections, the physical therapy,
tens units, etc. I am not pain free. I
am looking myself for some additional
help. I am on pretty strong pain killers
and would like to get off them. I heard
of a proceedure that puts a pump in you
back with medicine in it and it works
fairly well. I am not sure of this. I
asked my doctor about it and he said that
he had had mixed results with this
proceedure. I am sort of like you would
love to have some relief. Sorry I
could'nt help. I hate to take away any
hope of getting better, but I have been
going through it for about 4 yrs. Now and
don't seem to be any better now than I was
before surgery. I probably would not have
the surgery if I would have known then
what I know now. Sorry.

I am 57 and also suffer with neck and back
pain. I was diagnosed with degenerative
disc disease in march and after two mos.
Of physical therapy and one injection of
cortizone, I am much better. I will
never be able to return to my job,
however, because I was a former legal
assistant which required much computer
work. After several minutes, I must get
away from the computer since the pain in
my neck creates a problem. I have
arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis in my
shoulder and bulging discs in my neck.
The pressure on the nerves can be very
uncomfortable for me, but I have had good
success with physical therapy and pain
medication. I have come to the
conclusion that I will probably have to
live with this pain, which is a lot less
than several mos. Ago, or I will have to
undergo surgery. I do not believe for
me, after discussing with all five doctors
the problem, that surgery is best, so I
have requested prayer and it seems to be
working. That might seem strange to all
who read this, but I believe with all my
heart that it has worked. My physical
condition is improved and the pain level
is low now. God has answered and he is
good!
I am a 41 year old female who has this
problem also. I only have dds, but, I
know that it is very painful and very
depressing. I have had the injections in
my spine several times with no suscess. I
have had a discagram{which by the way is
very, very painful} and still I am in
severe pain. I am currently taking
perocet 10-650, and still I am in a lot of
pain along with stomach problems from all
the medicationd. I wish I could find a
Dr. To help me. I was going to a very
good pain management doctor in
chattanooga, tenn. Up until about 2 years
ago whenever I lost my tenn care. His
name was Dr. Gregory ball. Let me tell
you that he is one fine Dr. Along with
being a good friend and a caring person.
I now have my tenn-care back, but
unfortunately he no longer accepts
bluecare. If any of you are interested in
looking for a good Dr. Consider Dr.
Ball. He was the only one that I found
that even tried to help me. The last
time I was there, he was trying to get
tenn-care to authorize{pay for} a new
procedure called an idet. I never got to
have it done. I now am awaiting an answer
from another pain mgnt. Dr. To see if he
will take me on as a patient. It is worth
checking into. I am hurting severely
now, so I have to get up and move. I
hope this helps someone out. Dr. Gregory
ball is located at: consultants in pain
management, chattanooga, tenn. Thanks.

Boy can I relate. I've had spinal
epidurals and a week and a half ago I had
facet joint injections which worked so
well, I thought I had gone to heaven, and
I thought this was the answer. I was
absolutely pain free for a week. However
the pain came back over the weekend. I'm
having a rhizotomy on 5/19. My boss had
this done on his neck and he has been pain
free since the procedure. Should only be
out of work for two days. It's supposed
to last from 18 months to two years.
They actually use radio frequency to burn
the nurves, which is very close to a
rhizotomy where they actually cut the
nerves. If I can be pain free for two
years i'll take it. I've been taking
norco for two years along with soma. I
wish you well and will let you know how
this procedure works for me.

Sorry to hear that you all have had such a
rough time. I realize that the pain can
be very intense and the objective would
seem to get out of pain. I would
consider chiropractic care, not for pain
relief, but to prevent any further damage
occuring... I have seen amazing things
happen. Also please note that
scheurmann's disease is heredity and often
passes down from parents to son's. The
onset is usually in teen years and might
not have pain associated with it. It can
be worked with with proper chiropractic
care and could save your children the same
grief. Please check, rule it out, and
see them yourself. Good luck
