Tried to Skip Period, Have Had It Over a Week Posted: 12-14-04 12:02pm
I was told by my doctor that if I skip the
placebo pills on my pack and just start on
a new one(ortho try cyclen lo) that I
won't have my period for that month. Well
I tried it, but I did get my period, about
a week 1/2 after I should have gotten it
if I had continued normally on the pills,
but it is really just spotting not a real
period. Also I have had it a week and 3
days now, it has never lasted this long
before not even when I wasn't on the pill.
One thing mentioned to me by a friend is
that it may be a miscarriage and I may
bleed for up to a month and that my
friend's miscarriage was the same way, and
it wasn't overly painful. I have heard
that miscarriages happen this way all the
time and the female doesn't even know she
was pregnant. Is this a possibility or is
it a possibility that I am pregnant? I am
very unsure about what to do...Please help
me out if you can.

Odds are you're just one of the unlucky
women who can't skip their periods by
skipping placebos. I tried to skip mine
too, and I went through the same thing
you're going through (i was also taking
ortho tri cyclen lo at the time). My
period lasted off and on for 3 weeks then
the week after that, I got my regular
period. Talk about not fun. anyway, don't try
to skip your period by skipping placebos
since it doesn't work for everyone and for
some people it really screws up their
cycles. Continue taking your pills
regularly and things will get back to
normal.
If you want shorter, lighter periods you
may want to see about switching to a
different brand of pill since another pill
could affect you differently. I take
alesse and my periods are never longer
than 2-4 days.

Unsure.. The same thing happened to me
when I tried to skip on ortho.. It
regulated back the next month afterwards..
But for some of us it only delays our
period a week or two (then screws it up!).
I would give it time to clear up.. I
wouldn't worry about it.

You've had your period for over a week
because you tried to skip it using
triphasic pills. You can only skip
periods if you are on monophasic pills.
Triphasic means that there are 3 different
hormone levels in the pills depending on
which colour pill you are taking (for
example, i'm on triquilar, also triphasic,
and the brown pills are one hormone leve,
the white ones are another, and the light
brown ones are still another).
Monophasic means that, throughout your
entire cycle, you are only taking pills
that all have the exact same hormone
level. All the pills will be the same
colour.
Every time you try to skip your period
with triphasic pills you will mess up your
cycle. If you want to skip it sometimes,
talk to your doctor about monophasic
pills.
I really doubt it's a miscarriage. It's
probably just because you screwed up your
hormones by skipping the week off. If
you're worried that it might be, though,
talk to a doctor.
I hope this has helped a bit!

Its pretty difficult to do the whole skip
period thing if you're on tri-phasic pills
like ortho... That would explain why you
ended up bleeding even though you skipped
the placebos. My advice is, if you want
to skip periods, switch to a different
brand, like yasmin, or alesse, or
seasonale, or any of the monophasic pills.
