I've tried at least 10 meds over the past decade. Currently on lamictal, depakote, and keppra. The doctor is switching me from keppra to zonegran, which is a new one for me. Has anyone tried it? If so, any comments/advice? I hear it can cause kidney stones. If this one works well enough, my doctor says I can cut the lamictal next (and i'm very excited about cutting down to 2 meds).

Hey there, so sorry that you have been through so many meds!!

I hope zonegran is a good one for you. It seems to be a love it or hate it med. My kids have done fairly well when on this one. For my son, this was less sedating and impacting his thinking far less then any other med he tried. He did not have problems except on high doses, then he could not think at all and had more seizures. It is the med I am working to get him back on.... My daughter also has done pretty well on this one. It is controlling her mild seizures pretty well and has reduced her seizure related headaches some.

You can avoid any issue with kidney stone by making sure you drink at least 6 glasses of water each day.....

Best wishes to you!

My son was on zonegran at age 2 and he didn't do well at all
he just held his head and screamed...

As soon as we took him off it he went back to his happy self...
I would never use it again if the case need be..

Please keep in mind everyone reacts differently.

My Zonegran Update
Posted: 03-04-05 19:30pm

I'm doing okay, thanks for asking. It took a really long time for the medication to build up in my system though, so for a while I was doing terribly. My simple partial seizures are photosensitive, and was having them any time I turned the lights on. But now i'm on 600mg daily (plus the lamictal and depakote) and doing okay. The only side effect that is very bothersome is that zonegran can apparently be a diuretic. I feel like i'm up all night running to the bathroom and then drinking water because I get so thirsty all the time. But at least it forces me to drink water so I won't get kidney stones!

Yes, I forgot about the diuretic part. My son had this some. When he had to go on this one he had to right then.....I think my dd has some of this factor too.

Glad it finally did kick in but sorry it took so long!
