Most root canals are done over 2 to 3 1
hour visits.
Most dentists use a rubber dam when
performing root canal work, most people
find the dam uncomfortable but not
necessarily painful.
When the dentist nears the root of the
tooth closest to the nerve it can be very
painful especially if the tooth is
infected. The dentist will use
small files to remove the contents of the
tooth canals and if he or she
pushes too hard it can also be painful.
I suggest you ask your dentist to proceed
slowly and ask him/her to put
additional local in your tooth as he/she
works.
I would encourage you to put up with the
pain rather than have the tooth removed as
doing so may cause other problems further
down the track.

Root Canal. Posted: 10-24-03 08:40am
The pain associated with dental work is
different for everyone. I didn't take
care of my teeth when I was younger, and
i'm paying for it now. And I can tell
you from my experience that getting a
tooth pulled is much more painful than
root canal.
When you get a tooth pulled, most people
require pain killers for the next few days
as the gums and areas around the tooth
heal. Not to mention the money you will
have to spend in the near future for
bridge work, or implants (implants are
painful, and they require the
cutting open of your gums, and drilling
into the bone.) if you leave an open space
where the tooth once was, the other teeth
in your mouth will eventually begin to
shift, in an attempt to fill the space.
Which can cause serious damage to the rest
of your mouth.
As for root canal:
inside the root of your teeth are blood
vessels, lymph vessels and nerves.
The process of a root canal is to remove
all of these things. (including the
nerves which allow you to feel pain) the
inside of the tooth is cleaned out, and
what remains is the hard enamel shell,
which in itself has no feeling (no nerves)
since the root canal removes the nerves
from the tooth, immediately after the root
canal is completed, and the tooth is
filled, the pain will stop. No need for
pain killers.
Without nerves we cannot feel the pain.
The most pain you will feel during the
procedure is the needle. Novacaine is
injected into the nerves inside your
tooth, which will numb the tooth, and the
surrounding area. And prevent the nerves
from sending the pain messages (signals)
to your brain.
(first your dentist will inject the
surrounding areas)
really you have nothing to fear.
I hope this information helps.
Saving a tooth if possible is a much
better idea then just removing it.
Good luck!

Forgot to mention that a lot of dentists
now a days will complete the root canal in
two days. Well, actually, the majority
of the root canal is finished on the first
day, and a temporary filling is placed in
the tooth... Then on your second visit,
they take the temporary filling out, clean
out the tooth (squirt liquid into the
tooth - which you don't even feel) and
make sure that they got everything the
first time around. Then the perminent
filling will be put in, and your ready to
go! Nothing much to the second visit.
Also, if you are anything like me, the
thought of the needle is worse then the
actual dental work! So ask for laughing
gas (nitrous oxide) it helps to calm you
down. And it actually works.
Good luck again!

I have had 2 root canals, not painful at
all. It took approx. 2-3 hours, the
only pain I felt was the needle for the
numbing, even after the numbing wore of I
felt absolutely no pain at all. Don't be
scared, I was before my first one, and
when he found I had a second one I wasn't
at all scared. My dentist did the root
canal and a core build up the same day,
and then I went back later and got a
crowns on them. It may have been painful
20 years ago, but there has been a lot of
progress in terms of dental procedures.
It sounds worse than it is.
