Im startng college in august and I plan on
doing the decathalon (all 10 track and
feild events) I havnt really excercised
since last track season and it seems like
my six-pac is slowley fading away. Im
going to join a gym very soon (i get a
discount from my work) and im gonna start
running as soon as it gets alittle warmer
outside.
This is pretty much the only tings I eat:
begals with low fat cream cheese, skim
milk/water/apple juice, home fries, eggs,
cheerios with brown sugar, mashed
potatoes, some form of chicken usually
baked, preztels, saltine crackers. Id say
whatever I eat 95% of the time it will be
something from that list because most of
that stuff is free at work =), is it
unhealthy to eat the same things all the
time?
Anyway what types of foods are good for
you, I know the obvious foods to avoid,
like fast food places, and I know fruits
and vegetables (i dont really like any
fruits or vegetables) are good for ya but
I wanna know like some common foods that
are good for ya. Does anyone have some
websites I can visit? I really wanna
start eating healthy.
Thanks!!

You really should try to eat some fruits
and vegetables. If you can't eat fruits
and vegetables maybe you should consider
taking some kind of natural supplement to
help. Do you take anything now?

I wasn't much of a fruit person myself,
but I understood it's importance, and told
myself to stop being such a chicken, food
is food, and ate it. I pretty much eat
anything, Indian curry, Thai food,
burgers, nice green veges, fruit, I don't
care, food is food. From what I see, you
have a particularly high carb diet, some
protein, a bit of Vitamin A, C, calcium,
iron. Meh, your diet sucks in terms of
nutritional variety man =/. Basically, it
looks like you eat things that keep your
energy level going so you can do your
daily activities, add a few layers of fat
from lack of exercise and the high carb
diet, with poor nutritional value. Be a
man about it and increase your diet
whether or not you like the taste.
For some odd reason, to me, it seems
childish that once reaching an older age,
to complain about not eating this or that
simply because one doesn't like it. If
it's good for you, why not, all the stuff
that usually tastes great aren't good for
you anyway. It is an accumulated taste
anyway, eventually you will get used to
it. Guess who goes to subways, and when
they ask for what veges you want, says to
put everything in =P. I didn't like olives
or cucumbers and the like, -shrugs- its
all good now. It gets a bit agitating that
the sub blows up on me though and breaks
in half =/

I agree with Mikolas.
Your diet as you described it is high in
simple carbohydrates. It seems to contain
very little protein, and no non-processed
foods. Some people can get away with
eating this way, but it will eventually
catch up to you.
You don't have to dive head-first into a
clean diet. You can start by making small
changes and slowly working your way up.
Ditch sodas and juices and replace them
with water. Replace white bread with 100%
whole wheat. Snack on fruits and veggies
instead of crackers.
The adjustment takes time, but your tastes
will change. You'll reach a point where
you'll enjoy fruits and vegetables over
the fast food stuff.

You really need to start experimenting
with fruits and veggies and STOP with the
refined carbs stripped of their nutrition.
There are tons of ways to cook veggies.
I'm in college as well, and let me tell
you it is no easy task to eat healthy. All
I am allowed is a microwave and fridge in
my tiny dorm room. I manage to eat loads
of veggies everyday, along with lean meats
and complex carbs. I'm into bodybuilding,
so I stock up my fridge with tons of food
and manage to cook great tasting meals
only with a microwave. I LOVE food so
it's not like I'm eating nasty, flavorless
dishes like some resort too when eating
healthy. Try to implement more healthy
fats like olive oil and fatty fish into
your diet too. You're college cafeteria
is sure to have a salad bar. Use it. You
don't need to go to extremes like me to
eat a healthy diet. You are bound to find
some healthy options in your college
cafeteria. Look for fruit, veggies,
protein that is not deep-fried, and good
carbs. You will need the energy from good
healthy food especially if you are
running. Good luck!!

a great video to answer your question Posted: 02-05-08 11:00am
Hi, I'm new here, so I hope that this
isn't repetitive, but I wanted to show you
this video I found. While it's not a
complete discussion on all nutritional
needs, and it does emphasize fat loss, it
is full of great information.
Hey Miller... I am training for a marathon
that I do with my friends too. I don't do
a very strict diet, because I find that I
can never stick to it. I just try to eat
better in general. I work for a marketing
company that promotes Snapple's new
Antioxidant Water. I started drinking this
once in a while after workouts or with
meals and really enjoyed it! I was
concerned about vitamins and whatnot after
I cutout a lot of what I was eating in the
past. This water is enhanced with not only
antioxidants, but also Vitamin A & E.
It is thirst quenching and aides in my
vitamin intake. Of course I still eat
mangoes and kiwis, which are two of my
favorite fruits that provide a ton of
those vitamins as well. I usually look
forward to my Antioxidant Water though;
not only is it really good for me, but
also is a delicious treat! Let me know
what you think...

Couple things to consider and you will
hear me say this over and over again
because I can not stress it enough.
Nutrition is 80% of your success or
failure. Everything is supplemental. As a
personal trainer and nutrionist I see this
mistake all the time. People bust their
tails in the gym and do not improve
performance. Lets take a look at the foods
you are currently consuming....
All the foods you listed are loaded with
carbs and the wrong kinds. Athletes
especially and the general public are
consuming waaayyyyyy too many
carbohydrates. We as human beings are not
made to consume tons of breads (processed
at that). We are a hunter and gatherer
species and are meant to eat foods that
help us survive. Kind of primative I know.
Humans should consume grains and berries
as our carb sources as well as slow
burning carbs that do not spike our
insulin. Let em go through a list of
approved foods and yes it is short.
Sweet potatoes
Whole grain breads
Whole wheat pasta
Brown rice
Berries
Beef
Chicken
Turkey
Fish
Any green vegtables
Notice there are no juices, dairy products
or carbs that contain white flour or not
whole grain. These foods are performance
inhancing foods that help you achieve
fitness.
To answer your question , NO it is not
unhealthy to eat the same things all the
time if you are eating the right foods,
which you are not. Depending on your
specific goals as a nutrionist I would
breakdown your macronutrients(proteins,
carbs and fats) in a way that would
maximize your training efforts. If you can
clarify your specific results I can give
you a baseline diet and you can run with
that. Let me know in anyway I can help you
out.
