Men & Eating Disorders

My new boyfriend doesnt eat, I didnt notice the extent of his eating problems until I spent a whole weekend with him.

Basically he has one meal a day, and not even what you could call a proper meal, usually a sandwich, or a piece of toast. And he will eat the same one meal a day for months on end, for exmaple, recently it has been a cheese and onion sandwich.

He doesnt sleep, either, only 4 hours a night at most.

When I told him that his eating habits arent normal or healthy, he just shrugged and said he doesnt get hungry. He doesnt think he is thin, he thinks he is the right size for his height. But at 6'1" tall he weighs less than me (i am 5'8" tall and of average size/slim), his waist is just 28" which again is smaller than mine.

He also is hot all the time, which causes him to sweat alot, and he cannot get a full erection, his penis kind of gets semi hard, but not completely, I dont know if that is normal or not?

I am really worried about him, but dont want to upset him or hurt his pride by mentioning these things to him before getting some advice.

Does anyone know the symptoms of male eating disorders? The effects and how best to tackle it?

How Thin Is Too Thin?
Posted: 01-14-05 12:56pm

Vh-1 has a special at 8:30 pm (est) friday 1/14/05 called "how thin is too thin?". If you can't catch it tonight, check your listings if they intend to air at a later date. You can check their website, may be they will have some links also.

Check this out if it may give you an idea where to start.

Best wishes,

Men can have eating disorders, just like women. You should encourage him to see a doctor. He does sound very thin-6'1" with a 28" waist.Maybe he cannot afford to eat more than once a day,is that possible??I wish you both the best.

Guys rarely see their body like everyone else see's them. The only time a guy will realize what he really looks like is when taken in group pictures with other people around.

Yes, he is definately extremely thin. He will not get hungry because his body believes he is fasting, or that food is rare to come by. It's a natural reflex of the body... As soon as food reserves begin getting low, the hunger strikes... After a while of being hungry, with no food. The body figures, ok.. That's enough. I'm going into reserve mode. It no longer asks for food, but instead cannabalizes.. (breaks down its own fat / muscle) to use as energy. If you get him started with eating 3-4 times per day.. Or even small meals throughout the day, his body will begin asking for more food again. It may take a while, but you'll have to push him at it.

I have no doubt his sleeping disorder and erectile disfunction is also linked to his lack of nutrition.

I do not understand why he would constantly be sweating though... This is very akward. Usually you sweat when your body has difficulty keeping itself cool.. (larger people tend to sweat more for this reason). Underweight individuals tend to shiver and be cold more.

All these symptoms, however, sound like they are linked to current or previous drug usage... Even the sweating. Has he ever been heavily involved in recreational drugs?

Justin

p.S. Sometimes a guy needs his pride hurt before he realizes he has to do something. Sounds mean, but it's true.

Justin is right, seeing as your b/f does have a serious problem when it comes to eating then you should be more concerned about his health then his pride, because in the end he will thank you for it. As far as helping him goes, he needs to realize he has a problem before he will seek help for it so try talking to him and letting him know your concerned. As far as where to find help for this type of thing I wouldn't really know who to see, the best advice I can think of would be to look on the internet for maybe some kind of classes or to ask somebody like a doctor to find out where he could get the best professional help. Sorry I can't help much, but I hope this advice is useful and I wish you and your b/f lots of luck in dealing with this.
