Advice On Weight Gain And Depro Prevera=please Help!
Posted: 01-11-05 18:07pm

About a month ago I was diagnosed with endometriosis, and my doc said the best thing to do was knock my periods out completely. I was wondering if anyone knew how my periods might be (now that I got my first injection of depo prevera today) since they've always been very heavy before..
Also, I had no idea that weight gain was so dramatic in women on the shot.. Does anyone know if there's any way to prevent all the weight gain ( besides diet and exercise alone?) any input would be helpful to me. Thanx

I don't know about any body else but when I was on the depo shot there was nothing I could do to prevent weight gain. I tried everything dieting exercise and eatting right. But it didn't work but I guess it is just different for everybody. About the endometriosis getting the shot isn't the really the best for it. My cousin had endometriosis and she had to had surgey after the depo shot didn't work. But I hope you don't have to have surgey. And that you don't have any problems with the shot like so many people do.

I only gained.. Maybe 5 pounds (and was able to lose it).. So I would say it depends on the person.. Not everyone will gain weight.. Just do what you can to eath healthy and exercise. As for your periods.. I think it's the same.. It will depend on the person. For me I got my first period when I normally would.. But it lasted for about 3 weeks.. Then went away for a week.. Then bled for 2 weeks. The first couple of months I would not rely on being regular at all. After those first few months though I stopped getting my period and only would get occasional spotting.

thanks for your input... I just wish I would have known about everything that was going to happen to me before my doc stuck me...
I guess i'll just have to start exercising more and eating healthier. =)

Dear god no! Well, just my opinion anyway...I took one shot. One. I actually lost 10 punds in 2 weeks because it made me so naseous. Also, I had a 2 week period, 2 weeks off, then a 5 weeks period. Do you know how much that scarred me for life? I'm still afraid of the upstairs bathroom. I spent endless hours crying there when the bleeding wouldn't stop. Of course, everyone reacts differentally but....It's alos been reported that you shouldn't take depo for more then two years because of serious bone loss.

I agree that it totally depends on the person. I had the depo shot over a year ago and my life has gone to hell. I have gained so much weight, I went from 120lbs to 180 and I can't lose it no matter how hard I try, I miss my periods non stop (can't even remember the last time I had my period), I have so many aches/pains/problems now. I just wish I knew all this before I got the shot. Anyone know of a way to stop all these problems i'm having? Like another shot or surgery or something? help please!!

Actually it all depends on how long you are on the depo shot I was on it for all together 6 years and gaind 60lbs. The first year I gained 15lbs and I changed nothing in my diet. Just be carefull. I personally would say not to do it. But its all up to you

i got the shot once early last year and nothing has been the same for me since then. My cousin had then looked up stuff in the navy for her husband and she found so many sites about women in the navy who used this and had problems and she told me and that's why I havent gone back on it. But I really need some type of advice to help me with this because I feel so ashamed of myself. I used to have some weight on me but now I feel so crappy because like I said before I gained so much weight that I now have stretch marks and I look like I gave birth  I just can't believe what has happened to me and I really need help!!! Thanks

I had two shots and have been off of depo since nov 04. Ive now been having periods for 25 days out of the month..This has lasted for four months now. I am unable to conceive, I gained 30 lbs while on the shot because if I didnt eat starchy foods while on depo I would get so physically ill that I couldnt walk, when I tried to diet or eat just healthy, I got sick. The only thing that made me feel better was carbs. I was extreamly emotional and always had pregnancy symptoms. I.E sore breasts, nautious, cried easily. Yeah it was great not having a period for a while but I wouldnt wish on anyone what depo has done to my body. There are actual depo hate sites on the web..Look em up.

Good luck.

You had this to? It is so good to know that im not alone. I regret ever being on the shot and now the obgyn wants me to take more birth control...I really dont want to be on anything for a while. I feel like I just want to get this all out of my system. Plus my hubby and I are trying to conceive. I am honestly scared to go on any other form of birth control because of what happen to me with depo.
It sucks and I only had two shots.

yes!!!!!!!! I agree with you 120%! My hubby and I are trying too but nothing. I had this shot only once and it has killed my life completely. If I could turn back the clock god I would in a blink of an eye. I can not stand what this shot has done to me. :(

My mom tried to warn me but the thought of not having to worry about taking a pill everyday and not having a period sounded to good to me. I never thought it would effect me after being off of it for 10 months.

unfortunately my mom is the one who wanted me to go on it. The funny part about it is my mom always looks into things before we just 'do' like my piercings and tattoos and surgeries lol but just this one she never looked into it before we went with it and this is what happens. This shot should be banned!!! I can't stand this shot and I don't recommend it to anyone!!!!

Go to the pregnancy forum and look under the post bleeding for three weeks. This girl named kkkaayyy is going through exactly what we are going through. Lol I suggested starting a new forum called depo haters.

Hmmmm, I was on depo as well but I lost weight while I was on it!!! Also I did not bleed at all the whole time I was on it. The only bad side effects I had was bad cramps and being tired all the time, oh and my hair falling out. So I got off it and went right back to normal. Then I started ortho tri lo and I absolutely love that. But you are right in saying that every one is different and that some things happen with some that wont with others. A friend of mine is still going through depo horrors and she has been off for years, people who made that should be shot....

Hey when I first went off depo it took me 2 years to get pregnant with my son. After my son was born I jumped right back onto the depo a year later I got off it because how much weight I had gained. Plus I constantly had brown distarge like dried blood and always had to wear a pad. I never plan on gettting on depo ever again. I will stay on bc pills.

I had been on depo for about 7 years. I did not gain any weight from it, nor did I have any periods, which I absolutely loved
