Rotator Cuff Injury
Posted: 10-27-03 18:32pm

I have been told that I may have a torn rotator cuff in my left shoulder.
I have the condition for about two months with agonizing pain at times.
My question is to anyone who may have had this type injury and corrective surgery, what is the procedure and time that one can use the arm.
I am a scuba diver and plan a trip in november 15-22 to bonaire but am somewhat uninformed of the recovery period.
Can anyone inlighten me.

I started having some trouble with an ache in my left shoulder the first week in march. It just kept getting worse and then I started having a swelling in my shoulder blade about the size of a baseball. Finally I went to my dr, and he had me go to physical therapy for 2 weeks, which did not help at all. I had by this time lost all strength in that arm, and the pain was getting worse. He sent me to an orthopedic specialist, after ordering an mri. The specialist looked at the mri, and said that I had a torn rotator cuff and that I had to have surgery, it would not get better on its on...Just worse. He said it would be 12 weeks before I was back to 100%. He also stated that the surgery was very painful, but that I would be as good as new in 12 weeks. Well, I felt I had no choice and so I had the surgery. That was 3 months ago...And I still have severe pain, swelling still, and no use of my left arm. My dr said that my shoulder is freezing up. I have to go next week and have him decide whether he is going to give me a cortisone shot in my shoulder and put me to sleep and
make my arm unfreeze. I don't know yet what I am going to do about that. But I have been told by many that most of the time that this surgery is very succesful. I was the exception to this rule. I wish you luck, if I were you...I would have the surgery, but investigate your surgeon. Mine is supposedly one of the best, and I don't doubt that, but his attitude now really sucks. He doesn't want to have to deal with what I am going thru now. Good luck to you.
