Numb Finger Tip And Peeling Skin Posted: 10-28-03 02:46am
Has anyone had the following problem:
right hand (or left hand): finger tip (the
entire end section of the finger) becomes
numb. However, you still have feeling in
it. The general feeling can best be
described like the sensation you get when
your finger gets a coating of elmer's glue
on it. And when you bend it, it feels
stiff.
Then tingling sets in.
And then a few days to a week later, the
skin begins peeling off. First in small
amounts and then all at once. A few days
later, your finger looks just like new.
Several months go by and then the cycle
starts all over. Only this time on a
different finger...Same hand.
Please respond with similar occurences and
solutions or diagnosis!

the Finger Posted: 12-20-03 16:51pm
Been scouring the web for information
about this affliction. My 6 year old son
just developed these exact symptoms. He
is at the stage where the skin has peeled
off the entire end section of his thumb.
The new skin feels very hard and looks
painfull and red.
Any help appreciated

I Have the Same Problem Posted: 06-27-04 18:57pm
I have had this problem for around 6 years
now and have been unable to get any help
or find out any helpful information.
My problem started after having a wart
frozen and then removed from my left
middle finger, the skin never seems to
heal it just builds up very thick (as
tvwayne1 said it feels just like I have a
few layers of glue on my finger) and then
it starts to flake off, when I get it wet
for 2 to 3 minutes it looks as though I
have had my finger in water for a few
hours.
I really would like to get some more help
with this, if anyone has any information
whatsoever please please get in touch.
Thanks in advance.

I have had this problem since 4 years of
age. I am now 29. Many trips to doctors,
dermatologists, etc. And still no answer.
One dermatologist said it was eczema
another said I was allergic to my own
sweat? I have found no relief from
lotions,cortizone creams, or any other
prescribed medications.My grandmother used
to have me rub an excessive amount of corn
huskers lotion on my hands put on a pair
of gloves before bed and wear them all
night. This will provide some temporary
relief. Now I usually soak my hands in
epsom salt and warm water a couple of
times a week. Its not a cure but it helps
the pain a little by sloughing off some of
the peeling skin. Please let me know if
you have found any other form of relief.
I'm willing to try just about anything.
People who have never had this do not
understand how painful it is.

Heard both these theories from my doctor.
He prescribed protopic, and it works for
me, but it's expensive, and I just can't
get over the fact that it's okay to use
this stuff lifelong. Mine only happens
when the temps are above 80 degrees,
basically, summer.
This year i'm taking omega 3 capsules, and
not using protopic, and it's at least
50-60% better than previous years. I'm
not even taking the recommended daily
dose.

Numb Fingertip And Peeking Skin Posted: 12-11-04 13:32pm
Hi . . . My middle finger tip on my
left hand (i am right handed) goes numb
(half of it!!) and then the skin hardens
and peels off and there is thin but soft
skin and then the cycle starts again-
every 2 to 4 weeks). This started
suddenly a couple of months ago. I had
eczema on my hands (palms) when I was
younger. I related it to stress
agravated by coffee!. About 30 yrs ago
(late 20's) I stopped drinking coffee.
After a year I have never really had the
problem again (except when I decided I
could drink coke and that started it
again!) this numb finger tip is wierd
though. It doesn't really bother me and
is not painful - like glue on your finger
tip! I have alopaecia universalis -
total hair loss. It is an autoimmune
disorder. Has anyone found out anything
about this numb finger tip thing? I
would love to know!!

Numbness In Fingertip Posted: 12-17-04 03:00am
I also have similar sypmtoms of feeling as
if my right fingertip is covered with a
coating of glue and have a small amount of
peeling near the fingernail and also very
little feeling on the fingertip surface.
While doing a search to try to figure out
what is going on I discovered that herpes
simplex can cause similar symptoms. One
possible cause can be touching a cold sore
and transferring the virus to the skin.
If anyone has more information that this -
I would be happy to know more.
Fortunately I don't have a lot of pain -
but the feeling of having something on my
fingertip that I can't get off is very
aggravating at times. Does the condition
have to progress to the point of peeling
skin or does the severity vary from
patient to patient? Thanks for any help.

Flat, Numb Finger Pads Posted: 03-15-06 13:52pm
Not sure if I have been experiencing the
same thing, but I have been searching for
something on the internet that sounds
close to what I have, but haven't been
able to find anything.
I know what you mean by the "glue"
feeling. To look at the skin on the
finger pad, it is thicker and flaky
looking, but it doesn't flake off. The
sensation on the affected area is numb but
not... If that makes sense. When you
press on the area with a fingernail, it
indents and stays that way for a bit. No
amount of lotion seems to help. It seems
like it's spreading to the middle finger
as well...
I'd love to find out what this is and take
care of it!
Thanks!

Similar Solution Posted: 10-25-06 14:53pm
This is the first natural remedy I have
seen that is similar to what I have tried
that gives relief to peeling tips of
thumbs (mostly the right) and
occassionally the fingertips. I am
grateful I have never experienced the
terrible numbness and blisters I have
previously read about. Mine occurs
mostly on my right thumb and is also
cyclical and for some reason the skin just
begins peeling off. It is such a
nuisance and I usually peel back bits and
bits of skin to get rid of it. I also
suffer from time to time, ingrown
fingernails, but also is usually just my
right hand middle finger. My finger to
the side of my nail will get inflamed,
hot, swollen, sometimes accompanied by
genital find great relief by rubbing
castor oil on my thumb to relieve and stop
the peeling. I have also used this on
the ingrown fingernail by taking a very
small piece of cotton and stuffing it
beside where the fingernail has grown in
the skin and putting castor oil on it and
covering it with a band-aid. When I do
this at night, by morning it is greatly
relieved. Continue to apply to the
cotton until finger is better.
I like the idea of putting gloves on at
night and am anxious to try this method
using my castor oil. I don't know what
is in the castor oil that makes it work
but my skin reacts to the oil almost as if
it needs whatever is in it that brings
such relief to the peeling skin and to the
ingrown fingernail.
Good luck trying this out, I hope it
brings some relief as it has to me. It's
not a cure but I always love to try things
that are natural and usually in my own
kitchen!
I have finger thickening, then peeling,
etc. Diagnosed two years ago as fingertip
eczema. I tried steriod creams and
antibiotics with little results. Now
using protopic which seems to reduce
symptoms about 20-30%.

Hi,
I started suffering this exact sympton 2
or 3 years ago, with bad episodes peeling
skin down the side of my forefinger.
unfortunatley I suffer from a few food
intolerances that just make me feel proper
poorly for a few days (migraine headaches
included), but I think I've found what
triggers this - EGGS. I have excluded them
for some months now and the occurence has
dropped dramatically. I think I
occaisionally drop my guard with eggs
being an ingredient sometimes and get
occaisional re-occurences.
Give it a try - I'm sure this is what
causes mine.

well I had this condition for a while as
well. But it usually happens when the
weather changes or i experience too much
moisture. I'm not sure if this is the
same symptom, but my doctor says that
there's no cure, but it is not harmful nor
contagious...it has to do with the
impurities in your body i think...eat more
healthy and it should help a bit

Peeling Hands Posted: 11-26-07 21:32pm
Ok people, I have had this peeling
hands/fingers like everyone else, for
about 5 or 6 years. I would get it often,
it would start with a dry air blister and
eventually I would layers of skin slough
off. I think I have it beat. I tried
just about everything myself with no
avail, so I tried a different approach,
maybe it's something I'm eating or
drinking. First thing I tried was to stop
drinking diet soda, diet coke to be exact,
and any sugar substitute products. My
skin hasn't peeled in 3 months now since I
quit consuming diet products, I mean I
haven't had one diet soda since. My skin
used to peel every 2 weeks or so, now
there is no sign of peeling. I believe
that this is a food alergy or of that
sort, for me it was diet products, probaly
diet coke. So my advice is to start
removing a certain food item from your
diet and troubleshoot by elimination, I
would start with diet products if you use
them. Good luck, hope this helps, don't
cheat on your troubleshooting.

Skin Peeling Posted: 01-06-08 02:00am
i have a similar problem but my infliction
starts with the flu or a cold and only at
this time. Part way through the cold both
my palms and around my right thumb start
tingling and the skin is very sensitive to
any heat, be it water or radiated heat.
After a few days the skin starts to harden
like leather and shortly after a number of
layers will peel off like a dry blister.
The right thumb goes extremely leather
like, to the point I cannot bend it until
I tear the skin off which relieves the
pressure. Once the skin has peeled which
occurs over about 2 to 3 weeks, it leaves
a scaly like skin texture until it all
returns to normal about a weel later. The
skin that peels off looks like dead skin
but its not as if the skin underneath is
replacing it as it is very thin.
After it is all over the nail on my right
thumb grows with a raised lump from the
quik.
I am 44 and this started about 4 years
ago. No skin specialist has an answer
other than to prescribe very expensive
creams which do nothing.
Any help would be appreciated.

Food Allergy Perhaps? Posted: 02-19-08 10:17am
Interesting to hear the food allergy
(eggs) theory.
I too have noticed peeling skin on several
of my fingers in both hands and have
noticed this several times in past years
as I got older. It usually clears up
eventually but is annoying as it can make
your hands unsightly for some weeks. Not
saying for certain that eggs are the
cause, as it could be something as simple
as contact dermatitis with a detergent or
soap. Don't think its stress related as I
am on holidays and feel pretty relaxed.
However the eating of eggs does coincide
with this flare up on my fingers. I intend
to stop eating eggs and see if it
subsides, then begin eating eggs again to
see if it re-emerges.

Peeling thumb, index, and middle finger? Posted: 09-11-08 22:55pm
I have severe peeling on my thumb, index,
and middle finger - only on my right hand
and it never spreads beyond the third
joint. When it flares up I've tried all
types of OTC creams, steroid cream,
cortisone, and nothing worked. They made
my fingers temporarily softer, but didn't
stop the peeling, dryness, or white
fissures from getting bigger and
developing into a full-on peel. No luck
with doctors diagnosing it correctly. My
dad has it, too.
I read on another blog about someone
having great luck with Theraplex Emollient
for Severely Dry Skin and it's the only
thing that has ever worked in clearing up
a bout of peeling. It's hard to find so I
buy it at Amazon or from the Theraplex
website. It has helped me so much, if I
apply it at the first signs of peeling -
and I usually can tell when it's going to
start because of a numbness or thick
feeling in my fingertips, it either takes
it away completely or minimizes the
outbreak. You can order free samples from
their site to see if it helps. I can't say
enough about how much it helps my fingers
and a little emollient goes a long way.
Doing some research I found tons of info
about nickel allergies in relation to
fingertip eczema. Keys, eyelash curlers,
doorknobs, pots and pans all contain
nickel and many studies from the NIH and
Mayo Clinic site fingertip eczema in most
cases as a contact allergy - so handling
coins, keys, etc., made perfect sense
considering I only get it on the fingers
that I use for keys, counting change,
whatever. If you're allergic to cheap
jewelry chances are you have a metal
sensitivity/nickel allergy. Women seem
more likely than men to get fingertip
eczema because of ear piercing and the
high-nickel content of some cookware.
If my symptoms match yours, do a search
online for nickel allergies, then try
avoiding contact with nickel and not
eating a lot of canned food. There is a
lot of research on how to test household
items for nickel and low-nickel diets. So
many things contain high amounts of
nickel-eliminating as much as you can
really helps your fingers.
Hope this helps all you rough-and-raw
fingered comrades.

SKIN Posted: 10-01-08 11:25am
I thought it was caused by insects which
bite me at night while i'm sleeping, cause
my shinbone skin itches and showed some
small round scars (healing skin). this is
my second time my skin peals and goes
around 3 weeks and does not disappear.
