What Does An Ejection Fraction of 5% On a Hida Scan Mean?
Posted: 01-17-05 23:52pm

I had my gallbladder checeked today- the tech told me I didn't have stones, but my ejection fraction was 5%. He said normal is usually 30% or greater. (he said he is not a doctor, but that is the norm. I am waiting for my Dr. To get these results because I have contstant pain now. What could cause gallbladder disease if it isn't stones? (i have had fibromyalgia since 1997, so I have taken lots of meds for yrs. Could certain meds cause this? ) also, I have pain minly in under the ribcage in the right upper quadrant, but it also can be painful after awhile in my right kidney area and lower quadrant areas sometimes. (almost feeling like where the ovaries would be.) I am 37 yrs old and (have had a partial hysterectomy), but had the hida scan today.
Any advice would be helpful.

a 5% ejection fraction is definitely abnormal. Were you on any kind of narcotic pain medicine when you had the scan? That can cause a falsely abnormal ejection fraction.
Steroids can sometimes contribute to gallbladder disease.

Hida Scan

I have a prescription for lorcet for pain, but I don't think I had taken any. How long would I have had to have been free from taking that? I could have taken one a feww days before the scan because I was in quite a bit of pain, but since I have also had ulcers, I take tylenol for pain and haven't been on ibuprofen for yrs. I had been taking nexium and pepcid for the pain thinking it was my ulcers, not my gallbladder. I was in a car accident dec. 16 and had the lorcets then a a couple of flexeril, but not too many. I only took a few backat that time. This stomach pain has been going on for quite some time. Thinking it was my ulcers (i had 4 erosions 3-4 yrs ago) I stopped all sugar-(now use splenda), have been watching carbs and eating lots of fat free products. (that was the beginning of january, but that never even helped.) I finally went to my doctor, had an ultrasound-ok- and then the hida scan. I talk to the surgeon tomorrow. Are there any questions I should ask?
Thanks!
Kane
