Umbilical Infection My Doc Called It.
Posted: 03-26-06 17:28pm

Hello, I was just to doctor yesterday and he said I had a umbilical infection, three days ago after a shower I felt pain around my belly button ( I have a inney) that was about it for that day day 2 the pain was pretty bad hurt when I stood up sat down bent over any movement but lying on back. By the evening hours of day 2 I saw blood and a brownish oozing coming from belly button (freaked me right out).I worried alnight so day 3 went to doctor's and it was oozing like crazy by now with a pungent smell (nasty) . I learned that it can come from (moisture) in the belly button that causes fungus growth. (yeast infections) can cause this lot's and lot's of thing's can cause the sac to become infected ! I was told you gotta take an bacteria infection antibiotic ! Not one for the common influenza or ear infection ect! Ect!

I was told by a dr a long time ago that thr reason that their are so many ear infections is because once water gets trapped in their it has no place to go and it is so dark in their also for example if you swim or take a lot of showers that you can get fungus as well as infections, I was tols that swimer's ear helps or another thing that works too is white vinegar along with rupping alchohol and using a syringe dropa few drops of this in your ear and put your head back and forth at least this is what I was told about the ear but I am not a dr but I haave tried it a couple of times a day aand it seems to help me. I am not sure about the belly button thing, you might check with your dr or pharmacist.
Good luck!
Keep us posted to what you find out as I know it can be a stinky situation!

Belly Button / Navel Pain
Posted: 07-24-06 14:09pm

I was experiencing discomfort in my belly button, navel area. I remember noticing it at work on wednesday, especially when I sat down (see I have the “dunlap disease” where it’s “dun lapped” over my belt). I guess the scrunching of my stomach when I sat down aggravated the pain. Anyway, I felt a tightness with my skin on the upper side of my belly button. After reading about appendicitis on-line I was afraid it might be that, but it never ventured away from my navel area.
I didn’t go to the doctor until friday. While at work friday morning, I went to the bathroom to check on it. There was the brown goop and blood in my navel, accompanied with a god-awful smell. That’s when I got scared and went to the doctor. He said that “of the types of belly buttons, “innies” get this. What I had was an infection which was due to a combination of moisture and bacteria gettin’ it on my belly button. In other words, clean out your belly button real good and make sure it’s dry. He took a “wound culture” to send off just to make sure nothing really bad was in there. Then he sent me home with a prescription for doxycycline? And ciprodexx? (eardrops) and recommended that I pour alcohol in there 2-3 times a day (to dry it out). He said the infection was similar to an ear infection and that’s the reason for the eardrops. That was friday and today is monday and it has cleared up significantly. I have been doing everything he said. He warned me of the sting that comes with pouring alcohol in there, and he was right. It burns like %$@#! The first few times. Either it’s healed well or i’ve gotten used to it. The funny thing is that friends, family, and co-workers that know all say, “i’ve never heard of that.” my response has been, “me neither, but leave it to me to get it!”

If you have any problems with diarrhea or cramping you might want to get a small bowel exam and maybe a colonoscopy. Sometimes a disease called crohn's disease can cause fistulas to form (little tubes that lead from one organ to another. Typically they discharge a brown substance. Crohn's disease is usually present around the bellybutton area to the lower right but can effect any part of the digestive system from the mouth to the anus. I really hope you don't have it but it might be worth getting checked for.

i acutally had the sme problem many of you have posted. I went to a doctor and it was a infected umbilicus. They did a one hour surgery and removed the sac inside ur belly button and they found a hair inside. After the surgery I had no problems.

so I have a question..

Since you had to have that surgery.. Could this be a serious thing?

I've got most of the same symptoms, but without this distinct smell most of you talk about. I've got off and on pain in my belly button, and the pus-like substance inside, but not oozing out. And sometimes there are small hairs that are obviously being pushed out.

It's quite embarassing to talk about, so i've kind of been pushing off going to the doctors. But this has only been going on for about 3 days now.

Any help?

Hi everyone

i have been reading everyone's symtons, and yes I too have this problem, only this morning when I woke up there was a lot of blood & discharge in and around my belly button. This cannot be normal....There is still quite a bit of pain and there is a small hard lump on the top inside of the belly button (under the skin) and a very disgusting foul odor....But lots of blood...Like a kleenix full. I have had a scope and laser surgery through the button for endemetrousis approx 10 years ago, and for the past 8 years I have been complaining to my doctors. One said consider it a mini period....Duuuh that sounds normal eh? Another one said I need to wash better.....Never realized that for 46 years I never knew how to bathe. Well my hygiene is just fine and I would rather have a period in the correct part of my anatomy thank you very much.

Anyhow today I called the doctors office (jan 08/07) he can see me on the 22nd of this month. I'm so confused about this.....Can this be serious or am I just imagining this problem ? (another suggestion I have heard)

thank you

Belly Button Bleeding And Oozing
Posted: 02-07-07 17:35pm

My boyfriend just had this problem. At first it was a little uncomfortable but as the week went on it got extremely painful and was hard for him to sit or even put pressure on his stomach. When he came home from work one day it was oozing blood and puss. When we went the doctor they said that it was a granuloma infection. And if it goes untreated it can go deeper into the skin and make it into the intestines and would create a cause for surgery. If it gets really bad, any one who thinks this is what they have, should go to the doc. Just to make sure that it does get too serious.

Belly Button Oozing
Posted: 06-27-07 17:20pm

My daughter is 8 years old (just turned). Yesterday i noticed almost clear fluid from the top of her belly button. There is no bad odor, but it does hurt her when I touch her stomach area near the "opening" of her belly button. She is somewhat thin and has never been sick a day in her life.
Anu suggestions would be appreciated so i have a heads up when i make her a doctors appointment.
Thanks Guys

I have this same issue off and on - never more than 2x times a year - and only in the summer. So I kinda believe the moisture thing.

In fact, it's bothering me right now, stinky puss and all.

I have NEVER BEEN TO A DOCTOR FOR THIS. This is what works for me, I don't know what it is, or what causes it.

Here's what I do:

Clean it frequently. Every time its really itching, I'm in a bathroom with a bit of privacy, etc. Wash it out. When you can, when it seems really vagina, pour some rubbing alcohol in it and/or swab it. Use some peroxide twice a day to sterilize it and keep it clean, after the alcohol has dried it out some.

The rubbing alcohol burns horribly, especially when it's most needed. Be prepared, but deal with it and do it. It will help dry things out.

Good luck, and well, wish me luck.

Again, based on my body, I'm usually fine within a week. If its not better within a week, I'll really consider a trip to the doctor.

what i get is sort of different.. i'm only 16 and i've been getting this all my life as far as i can remmeber, first every month or two, and now its about 4 times a year. Anyways, my navel is very sensitive and if anyone pokes it or rubs up against it, i get a very intense tight pain in my belly button. not behind it, but in it. if i stand up straight it pulls and i hunch over so it doesn't pull. its so intense and unbearable that if i stand up i feel like i'll faint due to the pain. it usually goes away after a day or so but i'm just wondering if anyone else has this, because the doctor says theres nothing wrong but i know there must be something wrong because it hurts so much.

it happens when you have poor hygiene. maybe the water from your shower isn't very good.

Seriously Sick of This...
Posted: 08-18-07 19:31pm

I also developed pain in, and under my navel and was told it may be a skin infection, I took a z-pack (antibiotics), and it became worse. I noticed when I push my belly button out (I have an innie), that I had an ulcerated wound deep in my belly button that was very painful. I then went to a dermatoligist, who upon my suggestion cultured the drainage, which was very minimal. It came back as a staph aureus infection. Prior to the cultured results, I was so irritated: painful/itching/annoying...going on 3 weeks of no resolution, I went to the ED on a saturday, the dr. there said it may also be a fungal infection due to the moisture that is trapped in the belly button. She prescribed a topical antibiotic, antifungal ointment. The wound continued to stay moist however. The itching and most of the nagging discomfort subsided, but the wound did not heal. I then called another Dr. my new PCP, and told him the info. He agrred it should have began healing by now and prescribed cephalexin, an oral antibiotic. I am just finishing them and still no improvement. There appears to no longer be a bacterial infection, no discharge, drainage, but the wound is white skin with a thick layer of normal skin that is just gone. Again it can only be seen if I push my belly button out, but I noticed it is no longer just the lower portion of the belly button, but now it is an open ulcerated wound that encircles almost the entire inner portion of my belly button. My dr. again agreed, it should have cleared, and said what the ED dr. said, it probably is a fungal infection, and he prescribed more antifungal ointment. It is not helping, because it continues to be moist. $500.00 later...this is ridiculous, and I am starting to wonder where this came from and what is it...I guess I'll try the white vinegar/alcohol (rubbing that is) treatment...all though as a registered nurse, i have been taught that alcohol really damages the healthy skin cells as well, and is not recommended.

Bellybutton Tightness, Without the Fluid Or Smelly Discharge
Posted: 10-15-07 07:50am

I seem to have the same symptoms that Karmapolice had. When I stand up after being seated for a while, I feel like a pulling under my belly button, like it cramped up while sitting. It's been happening off and on for a few days now. I think it's happened in the past before, but never really for more than a day. When I stand tall, it feels tight, but like a good pain that it's relieving the tightness. I have good hygiene, and there's no smelly discharge involved. Anyone figure out this issue? Especially you Karmapolice, since you had the most similar symptoms. What did you find out? Thanks

Laughing OK so reading all of these replies, and sharing the same symptoms (mostly... some people are bringing up completely different things), I have come to the conclusion that my belly button is infected from moisture.

I'm overweight. I'm 18 and I weigh 200 lbs. I've been overweight since I can remember, and I've had this problem since I can remember.

First it kind of hurts, or is it an itch? and I touch it/scratch it. Then I feel the puss inside and get angry because my belly button stinks... AGAIN.
It's vagina, there's crust around it, it's bright red... like rudolf's nose red..
I get in the shower and scrub and dry it out and make sure it's dry, and the pain usually stops pretty quick.

I am guessing the solution to the problem of "the return of belly-stink" is to lose weight, so that way my innie won't be SO FAR innie any more that it holds water like a little thimble lol.

It happens at the randomest times... (i know that's not proper english) and once it's clean and dry it goes away, so it must be from it sitting on itself sweating and retaining and infecting.
Also, not to gross people out, I often find cat hair that got stuck in my belly button somehow. Embarassed though this is embarrassing, it may be a big reason my belly button gets infected.

SO my advice to the overweight people who get red, vagina, painful, crusty, stinky belly buttons, is to keep it clean and dry, and lose some weight with me... I'm sick of the puss and I'm sick of the extra weight so maybe I can kill 2 birds with one meal-replacement bar?? LOL

Thanks for all your input!
