Leaky Navel
Posted: 11-13-07 11:21am

I'm so glad I found this forum, I've been dealing with this issue for the past five years or so. I believe my condition is chronic. I don't always have it, I'd say I get alot of the symptoms I have read here about once or twice a month and it'll last anywhere from one day to three days. Hygiene is NOT the issue as it'll continue to leak after I shower and clean with alcohol. The liquid is clear but it does have a strong odor and my navel gets very irritated and I feel it deep inside, I have a very innie belly button. I brought this up to my doctor and she noticed I had a small scab and recommended I see a dermatologist????? I don't see how a dermatologist would help and my question is, what kind of doctor should i seek?

hey there I'm 25 and about the right wieght for my age.

I get the whiteish yellowish ooze and smell once in awhile too. rubbing alcohol and cleaning it out is about all one can do when your getting an episode. I think whats going on has nothing to do with showering or soap.

Whats happening is that theres moisture inside there from showers or sweating and its not being cleaned out. The bacteria has a warm moist dark place to brew and when it hits the air it creates the smell, like when your pits stink, thats bacteria coming in contact with oxygen. I think it could cause a minor yeast infection and that may cause the smell as well.

The best thing that I can think of is dry it as best you can, clean it out with alcohol or peroxide. If your bleeding then I'd be alarmed, but like I said I have no bleeding just slight discomfort when I poke around in it to clean it.

The doctor is just going to tell you the same thing and prescribe you an anti-biotic cream like hydrocortsin or neosporin type cream and to clean it out and keep it dry as possible. Maybe wear looser fitting pants to allow for that navel to dry out. I think belts or pants that are covering it don't allow for it to breath causing the bacteria buildup.

smelly, oozing navel

I wonder how many of us are out there with this problem?...and really with no definite answers from anyone...yet!!! I've had this problem since I was about the age of 19 off and on...some bouts worse than others. I'm now 48, female, presently overweight. I believe that being overweight is not the actual cause, because I have some friends that are even bigger than me with innies and none of them have ever had this problem and they are over the age of 60. It's not poor personal hygiene either. I think it has to do with our physical makeup. In my case, I have an extremely deep naval cavity...so deep that when I was in the process of cleaning it Monday evening the cotton tip of the q-tip stayed inside. I tried various things to get it out, with no success. I tried using an ear syringe to flush it out; I tried a baby nasal asperator to suck it out. I tried pushing tweezers in there, which was impossible. I finally phoned the doc which suggested I go to the emergency room prompt care. It was humiliating, but I went. The doctor there at first, had no idea how she was going to help me. She consulted with the other docs around for ideas and someone came up with using an apparatus used to go up into the nose. It worked!!! Opened it up and there it was very deep inside, the piece of cotton, saturated in that brown stinky stuff!!! I told them all that there was something in there, (I believe they all thought I was just a paranoid schizophrenic). What bothers me now, is that when I asked them if I should put something on it, they said no, put nothing on it. Take care of it the way you've always been taking care of it, which is peroxide on a q-tip, which I'm a bit leery of now...plus I'm quite tender. Still stinking to high heaven too!!! I had to cover it with a big bandage to dull the smell a bit for a while. I'm at my wits end!! I see my primary physician on Thursday. I'm going to plead with her to please help me figure this craziness out!!! Wish me luck...I'll let you all know how I make out.

did they ever figure out what that was? i promise, i have the exact same thing. It's been going on for as long as i can remember. i've had several hernia repairs. the doctor says, no more hernia's but the pulling and pain still persist.
I've had everything from trigger point injections to all types of meds. I'm suppose to have this Prolotherapy thing done soon; i hope it works.
Can anyone out there relate? Is there a cure for this?

pussing bellybutton
Posted: 03-31-08 18:18pm

I too have an oozing belly button. It's more of a dark yellow/light green color. Along with the fluid comes a terrible smell, a little bit of blood, but the more I open my belly button the more fluid comes out. It happens every few months. It'll start with pain around my belly button(only when I move around and press on it) and then a few days later this disgusting smell and fluid pours out of it. I haven'y gone to the doctor but I'm only 19, so why would something like this be happening?

Oozing belly button
Posted: 04-03-08 14:48pm

I speak from experience. I too had a sore, smelly oozing belly button. When it started draining so bad that I couldn't get it to stop, I finally went to the doctor. They treated me with antibiotics for a staff infection in granulated tissue inside the belly button. That helped for as long as I was on the medicine. Problem came back full force 1 week later. We tried another course of antibiotics which also did not solve the problem.

After the second go around I went to a different doctor, which immediately referred me to a surgeon. What the surgeon discovered in the examination is that I had a sinus passage running from my umbilical cord base to my abdominal wall and it was seriously infected. The oozing was much like the way a sinus in your head would drain.

Ten days from the diagnosis I had my belly button surgically removed along with the sinus passage and part of my abdominal wall because that tissue was also infected.

Please, please, please if you are having this problem, see a doctor. It can be a serious condition as it may be an internal infection as mine was. Had I had it checked one of the times when I had just a small amount of discharge that I couldn't attribute to anything else, I may not have needed surgery. The doctor said that considering the amount of infection on the abdominal wall, I had probably had it for quite a while.

Sabrina,
I have the same problem as your husband had. I have already been 2 times in the hospital since the pain was so hard, but they don't find anything. When they see the pus, the reaction of the docter was that is is medical ununderstandable. Could you please tell me what the result was of your doctor, since i'm still getting pus out of my navel and the pain still comes and goes.
Hoping that you can help me
Regards
Dolores

I was searching online for things related to pain inside navel. This message board came up. My husband this evening told me he was having a pain inside his navel...When pressed or touched he felt a strange pressure in his rectum just from pressing his belly button!

It is making me nervous....I will call the doctor tomorrow. He is 30 years old and has no known health problems. Anyone have any similiar experience, as weird as it sounds?
